Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that took the life of one man and injured two residents at 732 Decatur Street last night.
WPIX reports the house fire on the Ocean Hill side of Decatur was called in at 10:30 p.m. Three injured residents were transported to Interfaith Hospital where an unidentified 35-year old Hispanic male was pronounced dead on arrival. The other two, an 81-year old male and 40-year old female are in stable condition.
The cause of the blaze remained uncertain this afternoon as Kim, a resident of 734 Decatur, loaded her car with household items to make room for fire damage cleaning crews.
“I was in the house when it happened, but I have no idea how it started or what happened after that – I just grabbed my dogs and ran,” she said.
Police officers at the scene would not comment on the incident.
UPDATE: The Daily News reports the identities of the victims: the deceased is Eddie Ortiz, and the injured Paco and Nydia Ortiz. A 14-year-old neighbor claims to have seen someone running away from the house as the fire started, but the police are skeptical.
