Back by popular demand, the BushwickBK Photo of the Month is defrosting and ready to bloom like the crispy, dead weed flower pictured above. Photographed by Yorkaholic, this common urban flora specimen was probably found in an empty lot somewhere and is most likely an invasive species. Either way, nice use of that orange winter sunlight and focus/blur effects.

Yorkaholic, hi!
You don’t know me, but I am an avid fan of your work. You always seem to find that rare subject hidden in a corner somewhere. Or, you take a commonly used subject, but you alter the picture in a way that makes the viewer feel as though they have stumbled upon a never before seen entity. The best part is, you give it feeling. Take this flower for instance. It’s got a sensitivity to it-it’s a flower that has seen hard times in the winter but has made it through.
As always, I share my constructive criticism (constructively, of course).
The background flower is too big, in relation to the foreground flower and for the size of this picture. Big objects in a small space can have the effect of making the picture seem flat. The blurriness is a little strong for my eyes. A smaller amount of it, or just a smaller quantity of that back flower would have drawn my attention to it just as much, and would give it that quiet intrigue which fits the mood of the whole shot.
Great idea for a picture. The blackish part on top is really nice. The tones are very pleasing. They are what we painters call “warm shades.” I don’t know exactly what that means, except that I look at those colors and I know there is something warm deep inside the color, and it comforts me looking at it.
Cheers,
Alanna
