Residents trudge and shovel their way through the winter’s first snow on Cornelia Street. – Photo by Diego Cupolo
New York was once again hammered with snow after a mild November and December, exactly a year after last year’s first big storm. While there were reports of delayed flights and multi-car accidents on the highways, there were also opportunities to enjoy the snow that first night.
We helped a neighbor dig her car out of a giant drift on Central Avenue so she could park properly to visit her parents for the holidays, and then stomped up Troutman Street to have a drink at Tandem. I made a snow angel, nearly fell in a snow bank in the middle of Wilson Avenue, and by the time we got to the bar, we had to wipe ice out of our eyebrows. After a few drinks with some local friends we headed back home to shovel and salt the sidewalk.
Share some snow stories below. Happy Solstice.

I got into a snowball fight with a gang of drunken Croatians. Everything was fine until one of them snuck up behind me and stuffed my mouth with a handful of snow … snow that was covered in ice salt from the street.
One pizza slice and 30 minutes later, my mouth still tasted like the Dead Sea.

we gave the neighbor kids tons of candy on halloween; consequently i was spared a snowball barrage when i went out to shovel. i will never underestimate a bribe again.

I am amused to read that you “nearly” fell before you had your “few drinks.”

Big unwieldy snow boots.

Yes, that is what I would say too.
