Life in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York -- Bushwick news and opinion / blog

Bushwick Culture Weekly Picks 12/17/09

Brrrr! It’s freezing and we have little to no time to buy (ha), make (which is awesome for you artists and crafters, but not so much for me), or retailor some old gifts into shiny new ones. There are a lot of opportunities for dancing this weekend — possibly perfect timing for shaking off some of those holiday treats (So I had latkes AND Christmas cookies yesterday. Sue me.)

Today is hopping. Maybe Thursday is the new Saturday again?

This afternoon, revisit your undergrad drama days (or mine?) at Numu Arts Collective’s Story Metamorphosis. "Participants will each begin with the telling of a short personal story or experience. Each participant will then take another artist’s story and use it to write a dramatic piece. These dramatic pieces will then be performed by yet another participant."

Silent Barn is home to the debut of "Costello Presents," a new neighborhood concert series hosted (in song) by Dan Costello and featuring Soft Black, Black Forest, Level II and The Everybody Knows.

Big dance party situation at The House of Yes where Bushwick Wildlife Preserve presents Wildlife Thursdays (scroll down).

Friday, check out our newest (almost open) cafe option: Little Skips. They’re having a Winter Warmer holiday bake sale & party — with soup, sandwiches, handmade gifts to buy, raffles to win, DJs — basically the works. 941 Willoughby, 2pm-late.

3rd Ward’s 2009 Fall Solo Show Artist Johanna Heldebro Presents To Come Within Reach of You. (With Bear Flag Wine & Colt 45!)

A band called Cuddle Magic will be at The House of Yes. Advertised as "a good show to take your parents or your jazz professor to. We promise." Love it.

Future Islands (among others) play Market Hotel.

Burlesque at Gotham City Lounge. Gotham Underground: The Holiday Issue. "This issue features a human snow globe that makes pure white snow look dirty, new and erotic ways to trim a tree, an anime angel to tempt even the pure of heart and a Hanukkah religious experience you will never forget." 11PM, $5 cover (Ladies Free!) and drink specials all night.

BFP East presents its first monthly Zodiac birthday party for Sagittarians. $1 whiskey shots for Sagittarians and their guests. (They provide the cake.)

Saturday,
Petri Space will be open for your comedy pleasure featuring a full night hosted by Bushwick’s premiere improv group CHESTER. 114 Forrest St, Buzzer 15. 8PM. Free show/cheap booze/raffle!

The House of Yes (like whoa that place is busy) presents The Mickey Western Band with "acrobatics and hijinks by Lady Circus and the House of Yes."

Sunday is the Winter Solstice Feast: "old school loft party turned Bushwick Farmer’s Market benefit." 6pm-12am.

Wednesday is the last day of the Bushwick Farmer’s Market Holiday Bazaar.

Good luck getting everything done this week, team! I know the holidays are crazy. Get cookies baked, apartment cleaned, laundry done, and presents under the tree or near the menorah. Don’t forget to take breaks — while you’re waiting for your extra hot latte at the Wyckoff-Starr, be sure to take a gander at the artwork of Ellen Letcher and Kevin Regan — it’s awesome. And say goodbye to Starr Space yoga (sad face).

Side notes/Misc Stuff

I got a nice email from this guy Peter Dressel who is doing a portrait project on the artists of Bushwick. Email him (peterdressel@mac.com) if you’d like to participate & subjects will get free high res digital files. I know you need a new profile pic.

Factory Fresh has some great art on sale — check it out. Super deals.

Photographer Rafael Fuchs will be on hand at his solo show at Eastern District (heard the opening was amazing, btw) taking photos of locals for his Bushwick Yearbook project. I wanna!
