Patti Mac in front of Mega Laundromat on Bushwick & Varet. Click for more. — Photos by Nicole Wasilewicz. With the looming possibility of snow flurries in our future, you’ve probably noticed the mass arrival of knit hats emerging from winter storage boxes and out onto the streets. As we all tuck our hair into a slumpy ball of yarn to keep our ears warm, we unwittingly don a uniform making it impossible to decipher who’s who from a distance — a bustling street full of crocheted Crayons. This week, as I wrapped myself in knitwear to escape the bitter wind, I was reminded that it’s possible to stay warm and still look absolutely fabulous.
Patti Mac, 24, Artist
Walking down the often potato chip bag-littered Bushwick Avenue, I spotted Patti looking as graceful as could in the freezing breeze. With vintage fur accessories (hat $8, boots $20) and a luxurious asymmetrical wrap coat trimmed with calfskin leather, one would never know that below this chic exterior was a simple jean, t-shirt, and cardigan sweater ensemble. While taking a risk with a Cossack-inspired papakha, Patti’s winter weather frocks are both elegant and comfortable — proving that if us ladies took some time to flip through a French Vogue every once in a while, sartorial sophistication might come with better ease.
So do you live in Bushwick?
Nope, I live in Paris but Bushwick is my home away from home when I’m in New York.
When it comes to your style, do you think NY or Paris inspires you more?
Probably New York, I think. I wish I could look like a Parisian woman, but I don’t have the discipline. I have to say that I like the New York rough around the edges look more than the polished Paris look though.
If you had to describe your look in three words or less, what would you call it?
Black Gray Comfort
Whenever I ask girls to describe their style, I’m surprised how often they say they are comfortable. Do you think women in Paris are less comfortable?
Actually, I think that comfort in fashion is kind of overrated because I find that a lot of times I feel the most beautiful when I take an uncomfortable risk. Whether I’m in Paris or New York, [I like] wearing really insane shoes or doing something that doesn’t feel comfortable, like cinched waists and all that stuff. It isn’t supposed to feel comfortable, it’s just supposed to look hot.
Why do you think you look great today?
I really like the different textures, that’s something that I try to look at — details like the threads or different shiny reflections from the leather. And a touch of fur to complete what I think is winter chic. And also, I’m feeling particularly great today because I got an amazing haircut yesterday at Medusa Salon by Mary in Park Slope — the ultimate recession haircut.
Who would you say is the biggest influence on you fashion-wise?
My mom is basically my personal shopper. She buys clothes for me that are better for me than anything I would ever buy for myself. Again, probably the comfort thing. I tend to oscillate towards comfortable things, whereas she buys me just, like, awesome, crazy, sexy stuff like this coat which she got on eBay which I love because of its huge hood. The designer’s name is Maria Severyna. She’s from New York, but I guess nobody knows who she is — totally elusive. Her stuff is absolutely amazing.

I would get on a jet plane to paris and stalk this girl every day. Best fashion and hottest chick on bushwickbk so far.

Way to sound like a grade-A creeper Khaldun. Sure she looks good, but flying to Paris to stalk her? Not even funny, particularly considering that you posted that at 4am. Comments like these probably discourage people from allowing their pictures to be posted on blogs like this one.

Parisian woman in Bushwick GIVE ME A BREAK !!!
I WAS BORN IN BUSHWICK
Looks like she’s freezing to death, perhaps she needs to go back to France.
I’m getting agita !!
These carpetbaggers and euro-imports need to
1-Quit trying to change our culture.
2-Cut the crap and become a New Yorker
3-Go home if you don’t like it.

lol yeah maybe she should stab somebody or burn something down so you dont mistake her for an import
Elmeeky December 16th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
i’ve been wandering around bushwick for 7 years looking awesome, and nobody ever takes my picture. losers.
Kojo Opuni December 16th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
I actually liked this edition of Bushwick Chic. Thanks again, Nicole.
Kojo to Joe – How does someone become a New Yorker? I think that I missed that certification class back in ’79. Breakdown this “New York Culture” too, so I do not try to change it as well. Thanks in advance.
Hugs,
KO

LOL, yeah you got cred son. real street cred of bushwick.
New York City is the city of immigrants, get over it, 20 years from now the next immigrant wave is going to take it over.
and yeah, i’d still stalk her, and now I’m sober.

How many different animals is this import wearing ?
— “Polished Paris Look” my hineee, what bunch crap-ola in that article !
She must have scared 1/2 rats & squirrels posing for that advertisement.
Yeah she’s cute but that Eurocrap gimcrack ruins it for her.
Russian gangster strait out of Siberia or some 60′s Bond flick ?
I’m being a truthful native New Yorker here.
Patti your cute: Loose that crap and 2: DONT listen to mom, she’s had far too much holiday rum cake.

Yeah France is tiny and obscure, the two people in the neighborhood you know of who are French must be as immediately related as father and daughter. I mean France, what is that?
Mary December 18th, 2009 at 1:53 am
Very strange
I think Mom should buy her an Accordion to match that setup.
Shes pretty and could make a lot of $$ in tips playing “Dear Papa” down in the Greenpoint subway stops.
Nicole Wasilewicz December 18th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
For the record, Patti IS a native New Yorker- currently living in Paris.
And as a native New Yorker myself, I’ve always assumed “our culture” was that of a melting pot. Also, I am yet to meet a Bushwick resident whose family didn’t immigrate from elsewhere…
khaldun December 19th, 2009 at 8:40 am
OMG killing animals for clothes!
class up people, if you’ve ever felt fur, you know there’s no vegan alternative.
now go eat your nasty tofu dogs and cookies that taste like ass.
-Joe December 20th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
I’m not sure on the melting pot thing Nicole. After the Dutch Bushwick was like Ridgewood at the time almost all German for a long time
When I grew up in Bushwick in the 60s it had become blocks that were more like “towns” of groups. For example my block was smaller 1920s houses.
20-30 family’s of Italian with 2 run down houses owned by old German cat ladies.
You could then walk 2 blocks by the 6 family apt buildings and it was all Puerto Rican.
You also got the “eyeballs” careful walking through other territories, especially where the good fella and corner men lived if you were other then white.
I remember Flaky Freddy being beaten near death and sprawled across his convertible for trying to show his mothers a house to Trinidad people a week after she died.
It was like the scene in “Casino”
These people showed up wearing all these crazy colors, hats and rags.
(Flaky Freddy was an unemployed classic hippie who frequently flipped out on LSD screaming about seeing rats and ghosts)
It all went to hell overnight in 1969
Johnson signing Kennedy’s immigration like the bombings in London in 1944. 1/2 the returning Vietnam soldiers were heroin addicts.
By 1971 Bushwick was a war-zone slum. You could not sleep, salsa music, bongo’s and Gunshots went all night long like south central Los Angeles today…

Hi!
I had a pile of gorgeous Maria Severyna pieces picked out on ebay and before i could buy them Katherine of Designer Dream closet closed shop! I hope she is okay- but selfishly, I am dying inside because I was so wanting those pieces. It’s difficult finding a line that feels so “me”. Anyway, katherine if you’re reading this- please contact me! umi@umimassage.com
Thanks1
