Mary May and two other young women in crisp white chef’s shirts are busy checking in the day’s inventory that is stacked around their kitchen’s office. Cases of canned tomatoes and vinegar are piled around a gleaming white table, matching chairs, and kitchen counter, like an Ikea installation in use. This is Susie’s Supper Club, a newborn Bushwick business that makes and delivers ready-to-eat meals a tomato’s throw from the Morgan stop.

The name might be misleading to those who associate Brooklyn-style supper clubs with late-night dinner parties featuring homemade moonshine and secret passwords — Susie’s is actually geared towards time-starved parents. A private chef for years, Susie Cover wanted to offer families home-cooked meals with out the actual home cooking, so she tinkered with nutritious recipes, developed an online order system, and found a cheap space in Bushwick.

Though Susie and her chefs, all women, do not live in Bushwick, Mary tells me that they appreciate the area as an “up-and-coming foodie scene” with Roberta’s and Northeast Kingdom nearby. Mary also admits that while lots of their business comes from Brooklyn, it’s mostly neighborhoods like Park Slope, Clinton Hill, and Fort Greene that make up their customer base.

They try to buy local or organic when possible, sourcing from gold standards Satur Farms and Pat La Frieda meats and offer some vegetarian and vegan options; they just added a vegan gluten-free oatmeal cranberry cookie to their roster. Popular menu items include turkey meatballs and spinach squares — custardy green wedges enriched with Vermont cheddar cheese — and, says Mary, “really good brownies!”

If ordered online by 5pm you’ll have polite packages of mini meatloaves or mozzarella-stuffed quinoa cakes to set down on your table when dinner rolls around the next day.
