Checkers Brings Southern Fries to South Bushwick

There’s no such thing as too much grease. Just when you thought there were enough fried food places on Broadway, Checkers comes rolling into town.

The Florida-based fast-food chain has been spreading its franchises north over the years and the newest location opened last week near the Halsey JZ stop at Eldert St. and Broadway. The Bushwick Checkers is the sixth franchise to open in the city and 25th in New York state, said Jim Nellis, a corporate spokesperson for the restaurant.

"New York and New Jersey have been a very good markets for our business and we are looking to keep expanding in those areas," Nellis said.

Judging by the size of the line last night, it seems locals have been enjoying the chain’s signature burgers, fries, and chicken wings. But is it better than McDonald’s?

"It’s definitely better than McDonald’s," said an anonymous city employee eating Checkers’ seasoned fries. "The food tastes better and the prices are lower. They even gotta follow the same guidelines as other restaurants in the city."

Imagine that.

Surprisingly good. I had the double swiss mushroom burger. Very similar to Shake Shack but without the irony and the fries are better.

Checkers?!?!!? Uhmmm, No. Not the best of anything can be found in any fast food chain restaurant. A bit overpriced and clearly not the healthiest of foods. Fries? Burgers? Dont they use processed frozen patties found at your local supermarket? LOL!
