As if finding an apartment isn’t arduous enough, making your new digs feel like home is a similarly excruciating process. Especially if you hate your roommate’s furniture, there’s no stove, or your kitchen cabinets are the worst kind of Art Deco — just to name a few personal hells. If only accessorizing an apartment were as effortless as finding the perfect pair of shoes… luckily for us Bushwick folks, at Green Village Junk Shop, you can do both. I bumped into this Midwestern gal with a Brooklyn edge before stepping into my favorite Starr Street treasure chest.

Jenna Kohl, 25, Waitress

Speaking of effortless, Jenna defines casual chic in her crisp take on autumnal layers with a classic, although very rare, example of when leggings actually do work as pants. The draping fabric of her scarf framed back into a flattering silhouette by a lambskin jacket — a reminder of Jenna’s Wisconsin roots — manage to somehow showcase one signature piece: her shoes. She believes in taking off one accessory before leaving the house, in order to minimize clutter, and using solid colors as a surefire way to look put together — proving functionality can look sexy. But with her outrageous 5-inch heels, this basic look is kicked up with a serious dose of fun. I can’t help but imagine her apartment is a whole lot cuter than mine.

How would you describe your look?
I don’t really have a personal style. I normally just wear what’s comfortable. I definitely don’t wear one specific type of clothes. I’ll shop at very high end stores and crap thrift stores. I paid like $7 for my shirt but, well, a lot of money for the jacket and shoes. Actually, that’s what I love about Bushwick– no one cares, everybody just does what they want.

Is there anything you won’t wear?
I don’t do cowboy boots (looks at my boots and laughs apologetically).

Ouch. Why aren’t you a fan?
I just draw the line there. I feel ridiculous in them, anytime I’ve tried. Oh, and Uggs– anything but Uggs.

What’s your favorite part of your current ensemble?
My shoes! They’re Balenciaga knock-offs but I love them. I grew up in Wisconsin wearing jeans and sweatshirts. Banana Republic is the fancy store there, anything nicer than that you look too dressed up, or just bizarre. Before I moved here I had never even heard of Zara, so this is fun for me.

If you had to pick a song to describe your fashion aesthetic, what would it be?
Hmm, that’s tough… I guess, “Nantes” by Beirut. I listen to that all the time when I’m getting ready.
