It has never been cut-and-dry, and using community boards or police precincts as neighborhood borders is as useless and arbitrary as using zip codes or city council districts. EWIP is considered to be Bushwick more or less, and running a one-man crusade against this paradigm subscribed to by ALL communities, old and new, in the area is tilting at windmills. And comes off almost as motiveless desperation.

It's sort of unfortunate that a small, highly-gentrified section of Williamsburg (Northside) has come to be shorthand for a much larger and more diverse neighborhood (with very Hasidic, Latino, Italian, and industrial sections).

I've recently felt that there is this desire (by some) to shed the stigma of 'williamsburg' and what it has come to represent (Empty glass condos may say it all).
So some in EWIP are latching onto 'bushwick' because it has come to represent something different. Something new.

If it were anything it'd be North Bushwick, I think. I'm still going with the Department of City Planning on this, though.

(East) Williamsburg:

Bushwick:

Nowhere else have I had to have a 5 minute discussion anytime I describe where I live. Not sure why so few others want to rep where they live-- EWIP and Bushwick have very different characters.

I guess I'm just more of a stickler than most, and the "East Williamsburg was made up by realtors" meme has gotten under my skin too much lately.

Anyone else want to take back East Williamsburg? Much of the "Bushwick" art events aren't even in Bushwick proper, I've noticed.
