Notes from Bushwick
One would probably not expect much drama to arise from a site which concerns itself largely with restaurants, art exhibitions, and community gardens. Nonetheless, BushwickBK has the most drama-prone readership of any outlet with which I have ever been associated. There is no way to discern what this means for Bushwick itself; our audience is obviously self-selecting, and our commenters even more so, and matters are confused further by non-residents who post as well. But to the extent that a regional outlet’s commenters reflect the nature of the region, a good number of our neighbors clearly need to calm the fuck down.
A few months ago, I wrote a piece to the effect that Life Cafe charged too much and was aesthetically irritating to boot; this prompted a 72-comment fight concerning Life’s desirability as a local staple and my abilities as a writer. Likewise, it prompted the owner to reduce prices on some items. This was probably the only thing I’ve ever written that has resulted in some actual positive effect on the world. And for the most part, the comments were understandable.
Later, though, Hrag Vartanian, one of this site’s more thoughtful critics, provided a fine overview of the most recent Bushwick Biennial. But he neglected to mention a certain installation, this being a mobile trailer filled with plants and park landscaping, and he consequently drew the wrath of the artist herself. The piece, noted creator Kim Holleman, was so "cutting-edge" and local as to merit a mention. "It was also built in bushwick over the course of one year, ON THE STREET by a bushwick artist who is TEN YEARS strong in bushwick proper," noted the deranged harpy. As Holleman notes on her website, "Trailer Park is a site of paradox. It is nonfunctional, yet completely functional in its repurpose… By going inside, you will be able to go outside. A mobile metaphor and transcendent experience." Oh, absolutely! Likewise, Vartanian’s stated desire to see street art in a gallery was clearly that of "the typical white guy who wants graff[iti] to somehow be ‘counted’ inside a world where it doesn’t belong," at least according to a white female who presumably did a stint with the Latin Kings before moving on to conceptual art.
Then there was, of course, the bike affair, whereby contributor Diego Cupolo’s account of his beating at the hands of some would-be thief prompted more than 450 comments, most of which were insane. These fell into several categories: racists who held this up as proof that the local blacks are animals and that liberal whites will all soon be torn to shreds in an ironic uprising of violent natives; non-racists who thought otherwise; anti-cop sentiment; pro-cop sentiment; fascist comments by anonymous NYPD officers; apologies from other anonymous NYPD officers for the fascist sentiments of their colleagues; debate over who perpetrated 9/11; challenges to fight; attacks on The New York Times; unhinged advice to Diego that he ought to launch a punitive strike against the pair of neighbors who failed to render aid (from me); and comments to the effect that muggings are bad.
Most recently, a generally positive review of the opening of The Hibachi Tiki Hut, also by Diego, prompted a somewhat more critical comment by Bushwickitywack that the place was still rough around the edges; co-owner Lorien Flinn responded with a comment of her own that several of the problems would be addressed soon and further suggested that bushwickitywack might be too poor to appreciate the menu’s better offerings and too fat to have been comfortable in the resident booths. She later apologized.
The point of all of this is that I demand more comments. Also, lol, clip show.
Notes from the Outside World
* It amazed me that there were actually people within the fold of the Democratic Party who looked at John Edwards and said, "That’s the guy. Let’s make him president." Yet the populist douchebag was always hovering around 12 percent during the primary, which just goes to show how easy it is to fool southerners. One of Edward’s supporters whom he happened to be fucking as well seems fairly representative of the rest; it is now reported that he told the ugly woman with whom he had the affair that, just as soon as his cancer-stricken wife died, the two would be wed in a rooftop ceremony presided over in part by The Dave Matthews Band. What a stupid bitch.

You got it wrong. I was not debating Hrag Vartanian* who did not write that piece that you found on bushwickbk, but joined in commenting on that article on the blog along with about a half dozen people. (*he did review the BB, but not on that blog or in that article).
Dresden September 22nd, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Dude, to each their own, but that installation thing is bushwickitywac. Barrett, you’re a funny guy.
Barrett Brown September 22nd, 2009 at 4:39 pm
I think you may be confused, Kim. Hrag clearly wrote an article for BushwickBk about the exhibition and you clearly commented on the article. Click the link.
Captain Sensible September 22nd, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Nice article! I’m all for heated debates but things have gotten a tad insane up in here…
Matt September 22nd, 2009 at 6:07 pm
lol @ Kim! First post here, fist post there. Googling your name every few minutes must be tiresome. I assume you have a bot, or a street urchin/minion?
Matt September 22nd, 2009 at 6:10 pm
Oh, I do like your work, so don’t toss another innernet hissy! Or do, as this seems to be the place to do it.

This is one of the best things about the internet!
COMMENTS! Its’s about one third of the act of blogging and reveals so much about the world we live in. One day the NYTimes will charge their readers to leave comments on their site.

someone tweeted me this link this evening. ive never read the site before, but after reading this article, i look forward to becoming a regular reader AND commenter…

That’s how we roll – argumentative and arrogant! I didn’t move here to be a nice guy.
Mag September 23rd, 2009 at 10:33 am
This was a humorous and insightful read!
Thanks!

dude, just write an objective restaurant review without adding in all the self-indlugent tidbits and everything would have been fine. it’s a restaurant review; not an OP-ed.
Dresden September 23rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm
oh mr. $$$, that’s the point! it’s better with the self-indulgent tidbits! it’s gonzo restaurant reviews! frankly, it’s hilarious AND informative.
Barrett Brown September 23rd, 2009 at 2:35 pm
“dude, just write an objective restaurant review without adding in all the self-indlugent tidbits and everything would have been fine. it’s a restaurant review; not an OP-ed.”
The Onion read the same review and contacted me to see if I wanted to write similar pieces for them, which I’m now doing. A lot of people like that sort of article, and a lot of editors will pay for them, and I enjoy writing them. So, if you’re wondering why I don’t take the literary advice that’s constantly offered to me here by random anonymous people, that’s part of the reason.
mimi September 23rd, 2009 at 2:41 pm
I like these comments about comments….On a semi-related note, here’s an interesting story that touches on how people are meaner online than in real life…

Andrew September 23rd, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Oh but mimi, I can assure you that Dresden is just as wonderfully mean in real-life as he is on-line.
Wisdm September 23rd, 2009 at 3:25 pm
without the self-indulgent tidbits, where would new york journalism be?
Barrett Brown September 23rd, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Yeah, Michael Wolff would be even more fucked than I would.
Dresden September 23rd, 2009 at 7:00 pm
I’m smarter than you Andrew and I slept with your sister.
Cheney September 23rd, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Sounds like somebody needs a tissue because they can’t handle the truth. WAHHHHHHHHHH!
Barrett Brown September 24th, 2009 at 1:42 am
Note to our newer and/or more casual readers: “Cheney” is a toy fascist NYPD officer who has taken to compulsively posting dozens of comments to this site as of late, presumably during his breaks from posting other comments at the popular cop forum “The Rant,” where he is in the habit of using those little emoticons that not only look like a face but also dance around and laugh and wave their hands and whatnot; if you have a 12-year-old sister with developmental disorders, you probably know to what I’m referring. The little smiley face things that dance. Dancy smiley prancy babies, I believe they’re called. If you Google his other internet rage battle debate warrior name, “SecondGenBlue,” you can see them in use for yourself.
Say “gutentag” to Officer Cheney, gang!
Matt September 24th, 2009 at 8:53 am
short version: cheney is a dickbag.
Hey, back to part one of this saga, ‘all restaurants are terrible’…what happened to Phorum? Looks like their vacation became a permanent vacation.
bushwickitywack September 24th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Here’s an example of a neighborhood blog with about as much following as BushwickBK that posted a story about a similar incident to Diego’s in which a couple of residents were “attacked”. Most of the comments were that of general concern for the two victims. Very few were written by racists and hate filled assholes. You will notice that some comments were deleted by the administrator. Perhaps these very comments were similar to those left by assholes on Diego’s recent blog post.
This is how they handled it instead of letting it go on pointlessly for 400+ comments…
“This went from being a very productive conversation to being a forum for people to bait one another on tired subjects, so we’re going to close it.
We look forward to switching soon to a new content management system that will allow us to ban trolls permanently.”
I understand that the internet is a forum for all and don’t agree with censorship; but, sometimes, you need to know when to quit or when to make people quit.

bushwickitywack September 24th, 2009 at 9:09 am
Also, just want to make sure that you know my previous post is not a negative comment directed at BushwickBK but rather at those who post comments filled with hate and ignorance. BushwickBK is great! I wouldn’t be here reading and commenting if I thought otherwise.
bushwickitywack September 24th, 2009 at 9:13 am
@Matt:
I was wondering the same thing. I went there once and it was a nice place. I hope they didn’t go under. That is a much needed establishment on Wilson Ave.
Andrew September 24th, 2009 at 9:51 am
Dresden, my sister is a lesbian, so I think it is unlikely that you slept with her.
Then again, you’ve always been a bit of a girl, haven’t you?
Cheney September 24th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Barrett, do you even know the true definition of Fascist? You liberal douchebags seem to throw it around like it’s nothing. Just because someone doesn’t agree or has a different opinion that you elitist, intolerant and racist pieces of garbage, doesn’t make them a fascist. I wish there was a time machine where I could take you back to Nazi Germany and you would see what real fascism is/was. The way you throw your venom around, you’d either fit right in, wither away in a concnetration camp (like my ancestors did) or be shot dead on site depending on whether you annoyed the little brownshirts or not.
As far as me being “Secondgenblue”, wow you really got me. That news is about a month and a half old capt. obvious.
Dresden September 24th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Actually Andrew, I AM a girl.
savage severe September 24th, 2009 at 10:59 am
ZZZZZZZ
Barrett Brown September 24th, 2009 at 11:42 am
I said toy fascist, not actual fascist. Toy fascists are the sort who run around the internet posting fascist sentiments for hours on end. I wish I had a time machine, too.
