Vito Lopez acolyte Steve Levin handily trounced his opponents in the race for the 33rd City Council District this Tuesday, winning big in the Hasidic community, senior centers, and public housing, says Aaron Short in the Williamsburg Courier. But the party to celebrate happened at the Bushwick Democratic Club — Lopez’s (and defeated council candidate Maritza Davila’s) political HQ here in the 34th.

The 15,000 votes cast here represented a HUGE turnout, particularly in the context of low turnout primary. It would be interesting to learn how much of this is essentially due to the Hassidic vote and how well or poorly Levin fared in the non-Hassidic areas. This could be very much like the election that initially elected the late and unlemented Councilman Ken Fisher in this same district. At that time, Fisher barely received 10% of the vote in most of the district but cruized to an easy victory over a crowded field solely on account of the Hassidic vote.
By the way, while the vote in the 33rd dwarfed the 9,300 votes cast in the 34th, the turnout there was hardly meager. In fact, it topped the amounts cast in EVERY council race in Queens. And this was done without the Hassidum.
