Bushwick Chic: Perennially Hip Classics
Retired gentlemen Srs. Santana, left, and Rodríguez relaxing in style on Knickerbocker. — Photo by Molly Hamilton. Click to see full version.Older generations were ingrained with certain truths growing up, such as the merit of neutrals or the importance of a matching belt, and because of this their outfits are usually timeless. On a bustling, balmy Friday evening I spotted these two dapper gentlemen on Knickerbocker Avenue across from the park. It was like a scene straight out of a 1950s department store catalog. They sat in folding chairs, smoking cigarettes and chatting, watching the passersby. I was a little intimidated, in jean cutoffs, to talk about fashion with two dressed-to-the-nines distinguished greys, but they were very friendly and let me take their photos.

What I loved most about this pair was the complimentary aesthetic of each outfit. I’m sure they’re friends for better reasons than the fact that both have impeccable style, but the sum here was even greater than the parts. The details were well-chosen: subtle, elegant patterns, well-shined shoes, and coordinating socks. Even their mustaches were well-trimmed! A far cry from a lot of Bushwick’s ostentatious summer garb, these two are a testament to the perennial hipness of classic menswear.
How long have you lived here?
Mr. Rodríguez: 42, no, 43 years.
Mr. Santana: 20 years.
Has your style changed at all over the years?
Mr. S: Well no, it hasn’t changed at all.
What do you think about the way people dress in the neighborhood?
Mr. S: I would say, just about average I would guess.
Mr. R: I don’t think anything. I like it!
What are your favorite colors to wear?
Mr. R: Brown.
Mr. S: Green, blue, brown… Black.
Why are you sitting outside? Just hanging out?
Mr. S: Yeah, we are getting fresh air. Relaxing!

This piece was great. Good job!
LoL!!!
Anyone who has lived in bushwick for more than a few years would definitely recognize these two guys. The dapper one on the right runs a numbers operation for the local old timers. The corner chair is his office. If the photographer would have waited a little longer you would have seen him writing somethings down on paper… LoL!
That just makes him that much more awesome.
Now this is some style. Awesome.
