This week’s roundup is actually of Ridgewood apartments, but as usual throughout history, the line between this neighborhood and Bushwick has shifted like the sands, defined by its culture. These days, people are moving to Ridgewood and not even realizing it — whether because some tragic agent told them it was East Williamsburg or it was just a block or two over Cypress Avenue from their friends’ Bushwick apartments. Around the Seneca M is a lovely, lively, tree-shaded, flower-boxed, solidly working class area full of “pork stores,” diners, bakeries, and markets. For those who want to be near Bushwick’s cool but can’t handle its scummy side, this part of town may be ideal. It’s also cheaper!

A note: these apartments are usually listed by the (often older) live-in landlords themselves. They do not provide photos, they don’t list much information, and are not trying to attract the cool kids. Be respectful when you call.

$1500 — 1 or 2br: Make what you will of this — its listed as Ridgewood, East Williamsburg, and North Bushwick; said to be 1 or 2 bedrooms depending on the post; is called a geode (ugly outside, pretty inside); and the landlords live on-site. Weirdness aside, the apartment seems very nice, with original tin ceilings, moldings, wood floors, etc. Check it out.

$1050 — 1br: Amazingly cheap, but you’ll definitely be riding your bike into “town” (Bushwick) — it’s a bit up there. But it’s pretty close to the station and if you’re seeking quiet, this is the place for you.

$1150 — 2br rr: Very inexpensive railroad just a few blocks from the train.

$1500 — 5br (?): Proceed with caution — I think this may be a five room apartment, not BEDroom. Even so, it’s likely still got three bedrooms and as this intersection is quite a walk (over 10 mins) from the train, the price is not out of the ordinary. Great cemetery to jog around is nearby, with some cool old gravestones.
