Like most arguments, it all started with money troubles. Unlike most arguments, it ended with a cop getting shot.

The story began in the early morning hours yesterday, when Carlos Barrios was beating his transexual girlfriend, Marcelo Campanas, who goes by the name of “Hazel.” In the middle of the dispute, Campanas called a cousin for help, who subsequently called 911 and his friend Edwin Santana to rough up the “wife”-beater.

When Officer Rodney Lewis and his partner arrived at the scene they couldn’t find anyone in the couple’s home on Menahan Street. Confused, the cops began cruising around the neighborhood looking for Barrios when they found Santana walking down the street and got out of the car to question him.

It’s unclear how the scuffle began, but apparently Santana ignored the officers so they decided to take him down. While they were subduing Santana, who was only on the street to help poor old Hazel, a gun fell from his waistband and fired a single shot into Lewis’s chest.

The wounded officer was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center and is in stable condition.
