It looks like there’s going to be some cold cut competition in Bushwick this fall. A small group of friends have just announced plans to open a bodega-style sandwich shop in The Loom on September 1st — you can already hear the deli meat sliders revving their engines.
Owners Chris Demarco, Andrew Holt and Austin Huq will open the new locale in an 850 square-foot space adjacent to The Loom’s main entrance on Flushing Avenue. Though the trio is still debating on what to call the new hoagie shop/bodega hybrid, they are planning on serving a mixed menu of soups, salads and traditional sandwiches while stocking their shelves with the full line of corner store essentials.
“We noticed there weren’t many delis or bodegas in that area so it seemed like a good location to open this kind of store,” Holt said.
Initially, the shop will be open during the day and early evening, but Holt said he would like to keep it open 24-7 if the customer demand is there.
“Right now we’re contacting distributors and trying bread from local bakeries, but most of all we’re really focusing on making quality sandwiches,” Holt added.

wow. I live near there and will totally be there often (if its open late… that other bodega off thames shuts at like 11 or 12)

Awesome – hopefully, the better quality attracts all economic brackets in the area. That, I think, is going to determine their level of success. One hot pastrami on rye with mustard please. =)

Ooh, make that a lean corned beef on rye please . . And how ’bout a nice matzho ball soup? Could call it Katz II or Katz on Flushing. It would be great if they have a few tables – - there’s too few places to eat something inside . . .

Nice idea, but 24 hours? If I remember that area well, it used to be pretty scary after dark. Mostly industrial buildings right?

finally! brooklyn natural needs some late-nite competition in morgantown.

Sweet. Definitely looking forward to this. I’m hoping for some decent bagels (egg and cheese please)

It’s always nice when I hear the word ‘hoagie’ used in New York…makes me smile.

great… if the sandwiches are good I’ll be eating there a lot. I definitely could use another lunch option.

i don’t think the area exactly lacks bodegas, i can think of four in a two block radius. maybe they mean delis serving higher quality sandwiches a la Hanna food in w’burg. BK naturals sandwiches aren’t very good, so this could be a positive improvement.

It’s about time somebody brought the lox back to Bushwick. They are going to serve lox, right?

Update – the owners have started a blog about the deli’s progress: bushwickdeli.blogspot.com
They have a poll on there where you can vote on the store’s name.

Thanks for the heads up, Diego. I just voted! =]

These guys probably don’t even live in the neighborhood
chillinoncentral September 29th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
So what if the come from Greenpoint or Manhattan or wherever… can they bring a great sandwich to Bushwick? (and, hopefully, at a reasonable price). It looks like they can… and I look forward to becoming a patron. =]

Yeah I really don’t see why that’s an issue, even if it’s true, which I am not sure it is. Oh no, someone dared to open a store in a neighborhood in which they don’t live! Scandal.
