Evocative review, sensitively observed. I wonder, though, are Biennial’s really usually geared toward reflecting a theme or location? Or are they just an established way to get people to come to a distant location to check out a bunch of new art?

Of course, I’m also curious to what extent artists are using craft methods and techniques. Guess I’ll have to go see for myself!

Regardless, as a one-time Bushwick resident, I am continuously amazed at how the gallery scene is developing there. Glad you’re out there keeping us abreast of what’s happening.

Thanks for the roundup (and Flickr gallery) for those of us reading from afar, Hrag.

I’m interested in your critique that the biennial didn’t react to its host site. Unless “Bushwick” was intended as the theme, I’m not sure I agree. If an artist represents the U.S. at, say, Venice, does the work need to be distinctly “American” in its themes? Or is it good enough for the American-ness of an artist’s home base to percolate into their work in more subtle ways?

Actually, I think this review is a really nice piece of writing — in particular because it does not shrink from actually being critical. Real criticism! How novel! I think it’s great. I know it’s really hard to be critical because, overall, the community is so very, very small. But this review is not cruel and, in my opinion, the criticisms are mostly valid.
