I was told I could not get a tax photo of my old house because it was church property. Dingwell Bros. was a distributing office for Rheingold beer. They loaded the trucks and sent out fulls and brought back empties. They occupied the first floor of our house.

Although they were not a brewery, I'm looking for someone who may have info on Dingwell Bros. 60 STanhope St. between Himrod and Stocklhom.

Diego, this was, as always, a terrific article.

This tour covered a site that I also visited during my "Bushwick in Willliamsburg" walking tour last March, namely the old Hittleman brewery on Bushwick Place. When I was researching the tour, I just stumbled over the fact that "Goldenrod Ale" was the specialty product of this operation. Now it seems that this was a really special brew. If anyone knows anything more about this alcholic confection, I would love to hear about it - and possibly take a swig of it. Hopefully, I will not suffer any allergic reaction!

Thank you for your post, Mario! Very interesting. If you ever have time, I would love to hear more about The Jacob Ruppert Brewery and your father's barber shop.

In the course of our research for this tour, we came across all kinds of articles about the smells that emanated from the breweries of the city. In fact, we just wrote a little something last week on this topic. It's more about the 19th century, but I thought you might like to see the posting nonetheless: http://www.urbanoyster.com/blog.html - look for "The Smells of Summer"

Permit a life-long Manhattanite to add something. There was a huge brewery called, "The Jacob Ruppert Brewery" in Manhattan at the whole square block between 91st and 92nd Streets (Third and Second Avenues)until around 1965. My father had a barber shop near there. You can imagine the basic haircuts these brewery workers wanted -- no "styling" for them. Anyway, the "romance" of the brewery was offset by the constant strong smell emanating from the production of beer.
