So, how ’bout that fabulous weather we’ve been having, eh? Here’s hoping the weekend is gorgeous! Kudos to those of you who were able to make it work for MMNY despite the weather, and everyone please stay tuned for a rain date for the Bushwick Music Festival at María Hernández Park. It will happen… someday!
Tonight is one hopping school night.
3rd Ward presents: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love — author Jackie Battenfield reads from her renowned book & shares her insights for visual artists. FASTEN is playing at the Bushwick Starr for 2 nights only. Beauty Bar‘s weekly Thursday party Boogaloo Shampoo is on (with happy hour from 12-1AM).
Friday, lots of options.
*Make it "go-to-someone’s-home-for-music" night! Brooklyn Tea Party will host a live album recording (and dinner to boot!) free/BYOB.
*Eastern District is out to prove that art can be quality AND affordable at the opening for group show: "Plenty of Room on the Couch" (including work by Jeremiah Maddock). All of the artwork is available for $300 or less!
*Cinema 16 is back at Starr Space where it belongs after leaving us for the Bell House for the past few months. This round: "three short films that echo Mexico’s surrealist art history with live musical score by Lazaro Valiente." Always lovely.
Saturday: music, music, music, art.
Sleepwhendead is throwing another of their world-famous Subway Shows — this one with train-themed sing-a-long! The most lovable noise band ever, Twin Stumps, plays Silent Barn (& keep an eye out for their 12" on Dais coming in July!). The Division of Human Works presents Pockets of Lollipops with Visuals by Dylan Romer and TM Sisters. (freeeee!)
English Kills hosts an opening reception for their latest show: J&J: An Experience in Four Movements. After the opening, join them for a benefit music show (in support of a friend of the gallery who is battling cancer) at The Alley/BFP East.
Sunday, it’s your LAST CHANCE to enjoy the wonder and magic of Pocket Utopia Sunday Salons. See the show, listen to readings by Andrew Hurst and Kevin Regan, spout some unique wisdom, and enjoy a beer straight from Ben Godward‘s Goddess in the backyard.
Monday, it’s Sweatshop Social at 3rd Ward.
Wednesday, Really? goes weekly at the Northeast Kingdom Den. Really.
And our boys at Moviehouse present the first night of CinemaParque on the Handball Courts: a (free!) bi-weekly, outdoor summer film series. On the roster this week :"Bushwick filmmakers aged 15 to 17 present honest films on their experiences with immigration, sexual identity and unfair labor practices," among others.
Have a wonderful weekend & let me know how it goes, I’m getting out of dodge. Don’t forget to email (bushwickarts@gmail.com) and let us know what’s up for the big July 4th weekend!
