Bushwick is well-known for its overabundance of bodegas, but nearly as numerous are its barber shops and salons. Eager to discover, first, how the neighborhood could even support so many grooming destinations, and ultimately, what kind of community bonds are formed and strengthened inside them, professional photographer and Bushwick resident MARO went snooping around.

It was not easy. Many of the listed phone numbers did not work. Others were never answered. When contact was made, due to language barriers and the proprietor’s desire to remain under the regulatory radar, the persistent photog was turned down time and again. Eventually, with the help of local translator Nicole Champion and fervent assurances that nobody would be ratted out to any authorities, MARO was able to discover the unique world of the Bushwick barber shop through the lens of her camera.
