Bushwick Open Studios Profile: Deborah Brown

Deborah Brown’s sunny Stockholm street painting studio was our second stop of the day Saturday and it ranked as one of my favorites of the weekend. The most compelling works, for me, were Debbie’s beautiful “sky scapes” which she refers to as her own “love letter to Bushwick.” She has been working on this series for about a year and it is her way of documenting a neighborhood in flux — a gorgeous meld of urban scenery (e.g. shoes tossed over power lines) over breathtaking sunsets.

I spoke with Deborah after the weekend to get her thoughts on this year’s BOS (her third year of particiption). She reported hosting not only a record number of visitors (around 200) but also a truly varied range: “everyone from artists, people who used to live in the community and returned for the festival, little kids who live on my block and treat my studio like their after-school club house, and Manhattanites who have bought my work.”

You can see her work now in two (really great) neighborhood group shows: Norte Maar’s DRAW and at NURTUREart as part of the Bushwick Biennial. Visit the artist’s website to take a peek at more of her work and impressive resume.
