Bushwick Open Studios Profile: Nicole Killian

Nicole Killian (169 Troutman), who has worked as a graphic designer for Nickelodeon and other big-time companies, makes a separate body of work that draws on middle school awkwardness and social/ self-perception. A talented illustrator, she had some nice colorful pen and ink drawings on her wall during her open studio and put ongoing projects on display. A row of XL t-shirts with her face airbrushed on them are the result of a hilarious collaboration between her and airbrush artists all over the country. Another is Awkweirds, a collaboration with Amelia Irwin. She and Killian are currently soliciting vintage school photos, with the aim of compiling a book celebrating the awkward years.
