Bushwick Culture Weekly Picks: 6/4/09 – BOS!

It’s the weekend we have all (or…at least a lot of us) been waiting for …. BOS!
There are over 225 individual studios or events this year! The (presumably exhausted) folks at Arts in Bushwick have done an amazing job of organizing yet another festival and allll the info you could possibly want is available for download on their site. Plan ahead: the L train is going to be a bitch — but we can hack it, right? In a promising turn of events, the weather is supposed to be pretty darn good (unlike last year’s sweltering heat wave!)

Since the possibilities are great and time is limited, I’ve compiled a (scant) few things on my short list — including some recommendations from my personal art advisor: Kevin Regan.

GALLERY OPENINGS

Who needs Venice? The Bushwick Biennial is happenin’ all over town featuring a lot of locally-based art luminaries at four truly fabulous spaces. Openings Saturday at: Pocket Utopia, English Kills, and NurtureART.

Norte Maar is kicking off the opening weekend of DRAW: Vasari Revisited or a Sparring of Contemporary Thought with Mimosas in the Morning on Saturday. I heard from a very reliable source (after a sneak peak) that the show is "like a mini-museum."

Privateer’s group show: Haunts is a "living room gallery" show to check — Opening Friday night.

Factory Fresh celebrates their one year anniversary on Flushing with the Friday night opening of 2012 Featuring AVOID, BLOKE and FARO.

OPEN STUDIOS

Fortress to Solitude in studio #211 is on my list in 56 Bogart Street — Opening reception Friday night. After party at The Alley/BFP East.

Myles Bennett & Carla Avruch will be showing recent work, as well as a "new collaborative painting fusing their techniques and aesthetic visions" in 248 McKibbin St #2N (12-6 Saturday and Sunday).

Lolo Rodríguez and the Open Ground crew are continuing last year’s "Nuevo Estilo" theme at 106 Central — stuff from nine artists will line the stone walls of Lolo’s awesome basement.

Deborah Brown’s studio (scroll down) will be open Sat & Sun. Check out these gorgeous skyscapes. While you’re over that way, stop by Stephen Truax’s place for his and Brooke Moyse’s work at 240 Irving, which will also be open Saturday and Sunday.

Ellie Murphy "experiments with turning her studio into an exhibition space." It IS all the rage, after all. Info here on FB or check out BOS Map 5 #110. While you’re at it — hit up 567 Onderdonk Ave (Map 5 #109) for a built-out-living-space group show.

MUSIC

Eastern District Gallery will host tons of music performances all weekend long including: My Sister in 1994 (album release Friday) and Pass Kontrol (Sunday night).

Goodbye Blue Monday has another like whoa lineup all day long Saturday and Sunday.

Bushwick Live at 249 Melrose St btw Central & Wilson on Saturday will feature bands and DJs from 2 til Late.

Petri Space has a whole awesome situation happening on Saturday including performances by Brittain Ashford and Sharon Van Etten.

PERFORMANCE/VIDEO

BOS High Society Cabaret at Starr Space (scroll down) — this year "we’re rejecting the Recession Special in favor of some good, old-fashioned dressing up." That’s the spirit!

Galeria Perdida curated by Andrea Liu — video, installation, conceptual art on Jefferson (#70, Map 4).

The Division of Human Works unleashes its latest batch of madness. Sunday (#112, Map 6).

COMMUNITY

Bushwick Public Library hosts: Competing Needs for Space: Finding a New Way Forward in Bushwick on Saturday afternoon.

Lumenhouse hosts: Arts and Political Engagement Forum — also Saturday afternoon.

By all means, do not miss the now-open Putting Lot at 12 Wyckoff. NEK is down the block, so you can celebrate your social awareness about gentrification with some foie gras.

Grab a map and get out there. Now’s our chance to support the team, see some art & meet a neighbor or twelve! And while we’ve given you some suggestions, get out and see as much as you can — you never know what cool stuff you’ll find in the hood.

Have a wonderful weekend and check back next week for the best of what we saw.

The Reading Series will also be going on at the library from 3-5 — just in case you feel like wandering downstairs! There’s a multimedia/interdisciplinary panel and a reading.

This is my third year attending the BOS and it gets bigger and better each time. It is amazing to see the growth in the neighborhood and the community spirit.

The growing boundaries speak well of the expanding community. Can’t wait till next year.
