One of Bushwick’s main lures is its affordability, a longstanding asset that recently caught some attention from the media (yes, positive stories come out on slow news days). Today, the Daily News printed a fairly comprehensive write-up on thrifty stores and services mostly centered around the Gates Avenue JMZ stop.

It’s nice to get some attention on Broadway south of Myrtle Avenue. The recession-inspired article makes excellent recommendations like the Ralph Avenue Fresh Farm and Collado Restaurant, but many of the other places seem to charge average prices for the neighborhood and could have been chosen at random (or maybe these are all advertisements disguised as an article, who knows).

Either way, claiming the Associated Supermarket on Broadway has low prices is ridiculous. This place has the balls to charge $14.99 for a 750ml bottle of Bertolli Olive Oil and $5.99 for plain old Quakers Oatmeal — at these prices you’re better off shopping at Whole Foods (or Food Bazaar if you’re smart).
