Bushwick Culture Weekly Picks 5/14/09

For me, last weekend totally felt like summertime chill-out-and-the-livin’-is-easy. Lazy days, BBQs, and as a friend wisely noted, in the summer you can just walk out of the house and see where the day takes you. My personal plan is to attempt to keep up that easy breezy ‘tude even if we get all the rain we’re supposed to be seeing this weekend.
Tonight, take in some art (14 locally-based artists including work by Gregg Evans and Erin Haldrup) as well as food, drinks, and music at the grand opening of 38 Wilson. Head to NurtureART for an student exhibition entitled SOCIAL (VIRUS) with a special appearance by City Council Member Diana Reyna.
Silent Barn hosts a Showpaper Benefit featuring: In, The Derelicts and Holy Spirits. The Bushwhack series is back for another year at the Bushwick Starr — opening tonight and running this weekend and next.
Friday, street art continues its move into the mainstream at Ad Hoc Art. CRASH/DAZE is a new collaborative show of work by legendary NYC artists Crash & Daze: "a stunning exhibition of never seen before works from each artist and featuring the first collaborative works from these legendary artists in over ten years." Visit the Project Room to see work by Ewelina Ferruso and Laura Lee in the Alcove. Also stop in next door at Eastern District’s opening of: Away from Home, a solo-exhibit of photographs by multi-media artist Justine Reyes.
Starr Space hosts Settings for a Lived Praxis: A Micro-Exhibition featuring work by Knut Åsdam, Zbynek Baladrán, Amir Mogharabi, Jiøí Skála, Future7, Nickel van Duijvenboden, Gwenneth Boelens and Cédrick Eymenier. In true Starr Space fashion, this sounds like a multidisciplinary event — projections, performance, music and late-night DJ sets.
I know where all you cool kids will be. Todd P is presenting one of those shows that blow minds and made him a "major force in the avant-garde rock scene": Dan Deacon Ensemble, Future Islands and Teeth Mountain (B-More’s finest, y’all) at Broadway Backyard. *with rain location: "amazing rainout location hooked up directly across the street in that gorgeous old neoclassical bank building "martial arts studio" @ Broadway & Stuyvesant. It’ll be phenomenal rain or shine!" I have no doubt. Someone take some pics, please.
Saturday, if the weather cooperates, join the folks at Umoja Garden at Broadway and Putnam for It’s My Garden Day and maybe learn how to not kill that rubber plant. 3rd Ward keeps you in fabulous plans with We Are The Arm: Record Release Extravaganza. "On the agenda: deconstructed cocktails, mixtape swap (yes, tapes), and a "create your own ringtone" workshop. Brooklyn rock torchbearers Your 33 Black Angels lend musical support." I love high-concept events.
Sunday, join the fabulous Austin Thomas and artist in residence Kevin Regan (with coffee) for a salon discussion at Pocket Utopia. "Will and Mary Pappenheimer will talk about their video installation "I’m not saying anything, you tell me what it means," a rare and "Rorschachian" view of the Australian Bowerbirds. Acting as wacky ornithologists, bearing gifts of colored pom poms, the Pappenheimers follow the trail of the art maker of bird species, the Bowerbird, into the bush."
A couple of opportunities to pass along:
Video artists: Submit your work to Anti-Oxidant Video Salon — the next installation will be at the NK Den during BOS!
Unemployed Artists: Lydia Bell is staffing up for a new project: work for play — a runner up at last week’s FEAST.
