It was one of the highlights of my Spring last year — a memorable night full of guttural laughs over Bjork interpretations, tears brought on by emotional egg puppets climbing newspaper mountains, a full-frontal guitar performance, and so much more. Yet again, with an impressive lineup of five new performing artists/groups, the Bushwick Starr launches their second annual new works performance festival, The Bushwhack Series.
The Bushwick Starr, as most of you know, is our well-established neighborhood performance venue, dedicated to bringing a continuum of art and artists to the neighborhood. With a solid record of quality performances, and plans for expansion and growth, the theater is sure to knock (or whack) our socks off with this new festival. This year, the participants again span different arts and disciplines, including theater, dance, film, lecture-performance, and, of course, what would a night at the Starr be without a trapeze performance. The beer (Brooklyn Lager), and newly remodeled rooftop terrace also provide a great way to ring in the spring.
Director Sue Kessler is “thrilled” about the line-up. “[Co-director] Noel [Allain] and I put a lot of thought into how we could create the same kind of diverse and exciting performances that were a part of the festival last year — and at the same time, offer something new.” This year, for example, a filmmaker, Ryan Bronz, is participating in the line-up with three short films.
“But mainly, we’re just happy to be showing work that we really believe in, and the artists we assembled for this year are innovative, fun, and cutting-edge,” says Kessler.
The Bushwick Starr provides a professonal space for artistic development without high production costs or expectations. Learn more on their website — and consider supporting the work they do.
