The city council passed legislation formally co-naming Kossuth Place for José Sucuzhañay, a local man beaten to death in December by thugs from the Bronx, after recommendation by the Community Board. The attack took place on the one-block street between Broadway and Bushwick Avenue. No word yet what the exact name of the street is.

This is great news and may represent a record for the time it took in getting a street re-named. Congratulations to all involved!
I am glad that the legislation merely added the name to the old street and did not obliterate it. As the following link from the BushwickBk forum should indicate, Kossuth Pl. was named after a Hungarian freedom fighter at a time – the 1850′s – when modern Bushwick as we know it was just emerging.
So let’s now hail both the old and the new!
