New Checkers location at Broadway and Eldert. — Photo by Diego Cupolo
For some reason, the Brooklyn web is going nuts — real estate blog Brownstoner didn’t just report it, they checked in on the construction progress! — over the rather ho-hum news that fast-food chain Checkers is setting up downtown.
Sure, as fast food goes it’s pretty good — in the ’90s, the chain supplanted Burger King as a place to get cheap burgers for my family in Florida. Anyway, here’s a bit more hysteria for those prone to such emotions involving french fries: Checkers is opening a location at Broadway and Eldert right here in Bushwick, according to decals on the windows of this new retail building.

part of me is happy to see new businesses opening up on our dead stretch of broadway, the other part of me is whining that none of the newer businesses sell anything I want (except perhaps for these fries I keep hearing about).
I was surprised the brownstoner community hasn’t overwhelmingly attacked the checkers opening on court st; i thought they all hated chains in favor of earthy independently owned restaurants dripping with ‘authenticity.’ maybe some of the sanctimony drained out with the real estate bubble.

I found the idea quite amusing.
