It’s up for landmark consideration but in a preemptive strike against forced preservation, the owners have declared their intention to protect the terra cotta facade of the shuttered Ridgewood Theater and reopen it as a moviehouse. To make the soon-to-be three-screen movie theater financially viable, the ground floor will be converted to retail space fronting bustling Myrtle Avenue. In this way, like The Bushwick Starr, an art space (representing all tastes and levels of sophistication) can be preserved without being a total charity case.

I’m so glad to hear this. When it closed down I had a mixture of feelings. It sucked not having a local theater, but the place really needed to be cleaned up and restored. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with it.
