Up and coming Bushwick singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten played Market Hotel on Saturday night, as part of Arthurdesh, a benefit forArthur Magazine, the famed rebel psychedelic music publication. The scene was eclectic to say the least.
Droning psychedelic noise band Headdress nearly pierced the room’s eardrums with its enormous sound. This was then followed by a bizarre and varied series of poetry readings, hymns and political satire.
Then, Van Etten took the stage and the crowd quickly became entranced not only by her stunning voice, but also by her unique and captivating presence. Limited to a four-song set, Sharon wasted no time getting to her very best songs like “I Wish I Knew” and “Consolation Prize.” At times the set suffered a few minor sound issues, but she overcame the odds like a pro and delivered a solid and quite moving performance.
In between songs, Sharon shared her passion for the night’s cause. “It’s really nice to be a part of an event that is doing something good. It’s kind of hopeful, I think.” Also on the benefit’s bill were Jana Hunter, Mountainhood, Quad, Dr. Ragtime and White Hills.
