Bushwick Culture Weekend Picks 2/12/09

My wise astrology-aware friends tell me that Mercury came out of retrograde, and I am totally feeling some positive vibes this week! I hope it’s a sign of more good things to come & at least for now, it’s unseasonably warm and we have a zillion events (many are free — recession chic!) to choose from this weekend.

Tonight, head to Factory Fresh for the opening of Anxiety Room (timely title, I must say). Artists Jon Burgerman and Jim Avignon have filled the gallery with custom-created artwork and the opening includes a painting performance called “Anxiety Broom.” Go! It looks amazing! Don Pedro’s brings you “Solo Dame Indie Pop” a night of “Indie Pop/Rock Music/DJ … featuring mainly Spanish-speaking bands.”

Friday (yes…the 13th), it’s finally time for Bounce That Beat: Bushwick Art Spaces Open Late. The geniuses (who also happen to be extremely nice and supportive of the Bushwick arts community) over at Norte Maar have organized a gallery evening with sponsor ArtCal. Visit Norte Maar, Pocket Utopia, Privateer, Ad Hoc Art, Factory Fresh, and definitely English Kills — who are fabulous and sent out my favorite email of the week. They’ll be making a “big stock-pot of butternut squash and apple soup.. byob but we’ll have some tequilla on hand that Hornitos donated for the event, we will also be collecting donations to replace a friend’s dead tarantula.” I love it here. Go out and see what all the “Bushwick Art Scenefuss is about.

Also on the agenda for tomorrow, Cinema 16’s latest installment featuring a film by Elia Kazan and live soundtrack by the Wild Yaks (I hear those fabulous artisanal ice cream guys will be on hand!), another chance to see ZsaZsa Land, and bands at The Bushwick Starr and Silent Barn. Wow.

Saturday, you can choose the event that matches your emotional response to the “holiday.” If love is in the air, you may want to take your sweetheart to the Bushwick Public Library (romantic!) for a special Valentine’s Day edition of Readings in the Library. (Incidentally two of BushwickBK’s finest — Aaron Short and Matt Carney — will be reading). If you’re feeling upbeat about the romantic possibilities that abound, perhaps you’d enjoy The BCat and CTown Variety Show, a comedy spectacular at Petri Space, or check out Buffie Gilbert’s lineup at Duck Duck. If you’re feeling a bit more surly, check out Surreal Estate’s Anti-Valentine’s Day Party featuring lots of crazy shit: Living Room art gallery with Freegan DIY and BK Street art, Ecology and Garbage style open runway fashion show, FREE tantric yoga workshop and “Forget Hallmark” open mic. If you’re just straight up MAD about it, head to the Halsey stop for the Valentine’s Day RIOT at Refuge.

Whatever you do this weekend, Bushwick, remember that the Culture team is always on hand to be your Valentine. We love you. Have a great one!
