Last year’s Cabaret at Open Studios ’08
Last night I had the chance to sit in on a meeting for Arts in Bushwick‘s latest endeavor, Bushwick SITE Performance Festival, which is scheduled to take place the weekend of March 7 and 8, 2009. And with a little more than a month to go, the organization is pushing hard to get the word out to any and all kinds of performance artists — dancers, trapeze artists, musicians, theater groups, or anything else performance-related — to sign up to participate in the event.
Unlike past Arts in Bushwick events, which largely centered on visual arts, this upcoming festival will be focused exclusively on performance art, and will not be seeking work from visual artists. The event will be centered around three hub spaces: Chez Bushwick, the Bushwick Starr, and Lumenhouse, with other performances set up by participants themselves in the typical DIY spirit of the organization.
Registration is open only until February 10 (i.e., about two weeks away), so anyone who’s interested needs to get rolling fast.
As is always the case with this group’s events, participating in the festival is a great way for artists to showcase and promote their work, as well as meet and collaborate with other artists in a wide range of disciplines in the neighborhood.

Maybe I’m just a little confused…
but don’t performers usually GET paid to perform as opposed to PAYING to perform? what kind of benefit is there to this?
Not that I get paid a ton to perform, but I’d never perform for free, unless it’s for charity, let alone pay for it!
If the benefit is charity, still, I think the spectators should be charged, not the entertainment. Maybe I am missing something here though?

Seems to me that the Arts in Bushwick “about us” section pretty much justifies the reasons for/benefits of an artist fee (and notes that artist-volunteers will pay no fee).

OK, thanks…I guess I misunderstood, I thought it said something about a $50 registration fee.

Please note: our website is actually artsinbushwick.org, not artsinbushwick.com as linked. The “sign up” link is correct, though.
Thanks!

Just a heads up, I just got an email from AIB that said that since the economy’s in such a bad way the registration fee for the event has been waived, and the deadline for registration has been extended to Monday, February 16th. Anyone who’s already paid will be refunded.
