Wall-to-wall crowds throng Ad Hoc’s “Delineations” exhibit. — Photos by Diego Cupolo
Maybe it was the free cranberry and vodka drinks. Perhaps the surprise noise show next door. Whatever it was, Ad Hoc Art gallery was overflowing with curious people on Friday night during its latest opening reception.
“I don’t think it’s ever been this packed in here,” said Andrew Ford, director of Ad Hoc Art. “We have almost 75 artists showcasing their work tonight and I’m sure they all invited their friends.”

Though the crowd was hard to navigate without spilling your drink, the amount of talented artists on the walls and the brief meditative moments their work generated made the struggle rewarding. The lively night kicked off three shows, “The insecurities of time” by Israeli artist Know Hope, “A Sequence of Images” by Melissa Murray, and “Delineations” a large assortment of illustrations from local and international artists.
The recent addition of the Project Room has added an entirely new dimension to the Ad Hoc experience and Know Hope’s impressive, life-sized diorama really took advantage of the space. Never have cardboard cutouts harnessed so many delicate human emotions. But I have to admit: the long, fragile arms of his humble caricatures reminded me, in some ways, of those ultra-creepy Salad Fingers animations.

Overall, the Project Room’s offerings along with the outstanding compilation of artistic ability in the front make this show one of Ad Hoc’s finest and most worthwhile. It’s the best bang for your buck without spending a dime.
The exhibit runs until Feb. 15, 2009.
