The William Ulmer Brewery Complex at 31 Belvedere Street has withstood many storms. — Photo by Diego Cupolo
This brick behemoth is unlikely to be in any danger of being destroyed, but that isn’t stopping the Landmarks Preservation Commission from being extra sure. The former William Ulmer Brewery Complex at 31 Belvedere and 26-28 Locust, which presumably includes the historic office and stable house, is to be calendared for a public hearing [pdf] on granting the property the status of historic landmark.
I wonder if William Ulmer, who came to Bushwick from Germany at age 17 and died in 1907, would be pleased with the designation. He would likely be surprised that his company’s facilities still stand at all, especially considering the short life of the amusement park he established in Bath Beach, the only evidence remaining being the name of the nearby Ulmer Park bus depot.
(Thanks again to the Queens Crapper for the tip.)

I think the building has been closed down since the days of prohibition, circa 1920. And, landmarking it will prevent any development in it? Historically, I’m glad for the building… but I question what the value is going forward.

This is a very positive development. Hopefully, some more of the fine buildings further down Bushwick Ave. will also be considered in the future.
If you didn’t notice it, a residential district in Ridgewood also appears on the Landmark Commission’s agenda. While this area has been listed as an area of historical significance, I believe this represents the initial attempt to actually landmark it. Anyhow, a very fine step in the right direction.

Landmarking will prevent it from being torn down. It can still be developed into condos, office, or retail space.

That seems fine with me, especially since the character of the building will have to be preserved. In fact, this could make a really great residential conversion.
