Local artist Rebekah Potter and her parasol on Jefferson Street.

I got a package from local artist Rebekah Potter, and was delighted to find a small piece of wood painted with an image of a tree adorned with candles over the label “bushwick.” It took me a moment to realize that the image was a play on the name of our neighborhood.

Rebekah says her hand-painted “bloKs” are “often a play on words and range from funny to more endearing… they are something I make to connect with people. To help all of us realize these small everyday things in our lives that mean so much to us but might go unnoticed.”

She grew up all over the US and Japan, and has been in Bushwick for about a year and a half. “I ended up in Bushwick by chance — first as a landing pad, and then I decided to stay. I love the look of it and all of its contrasting elements,” says the artist. “In Bushwick’s industrial areas I feel inspired. There’s friendly people, good food, and I can pay my rent!”

Rebekah’s bloKs come in three sizes: a mini that is 2.5×3 inches, standard 3×5, and large 8×10. They’re sanded wood, hand painted in acrylic, and come ready to hang. For more of her work, check out her Etsy shop, where she also sells handmade bags. Don’t be afraid to ask for a custom piece: “The best bloKs are collaborative, when people send me their ideas and I can bring it to reality.”
