In protest of the evil crime that took place Monday morning and in support of the family of murdered Bushwick resident Jose Sucuzhañay, vigils have been organized for Sunday.
FROM MYRTLE-WYCKOFF AREA, 2PM: Sunday, December 14 at 2pm at the Children’s Community Park at the corner of Grove St. and Myrtle Ave. The march will proceed to the scene of the crime at Bushwick Ave. and Kossuth Place.
There is news that the below one has been canceled and everyone will attend the above one. There are still flyers for the 7PM one all over town, so I can’t confirm any of this.
FROM MORGAN AREA, 7-8PM: Sunday, December 14 at 2pm in front of The Archive café and AdHoc Art at 49 Bogart Street (at Seigel and Bogart) at 7pm. The march will proceed to the scene of the crime at Bushwick Ave. and Kossuth Place and have a few moments of silence at 8pm.
If you know of other similar actions please let me know and I will post them as updates here.

Change of plans! Make the Road is planning a vigil so they have been combined:
CANDLELIGHT VIGIL FOR A BUSHWICK HATE CRIME
Sunday, December 14th
REVISED PLAN:
We will all be joining the vigil organized by Make the Road NY. We will be gathering at 2pm near their offices, at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Grove Street. We will then walk to the site of the attack (Bushwick Avenue and Kossuth Place) for a vigil at 4pm. The previously planned walk at 7pm starting in front of the Archive will no longer be happening – we hope you will join with us at the march and vigil organized by Make the Road. Thanks!

Where can I go to confirm this info?

I think it’s true. I just got a revised email from Arts in Bushwick, which is how I heard about the 7 pm vigil in the first place. In any case, I’m going to the 2 pm vigil. It’s a better time of day to show support anyway — in the daylight. Maybe I’ll go to both but I’m definitely going to the 2 pm one.

The post I put up was copied from the email sent out by Arts in Bushwick

There are still flyers up all over town about the 7PM one. I don’t see why it should be canceled at all. Whatever, I’ll mention the note.

With the assistance of Make the Road and our hosts at 3rd Ward, we have arranged to collect donations for Jose Sucuzhañay’s family at this week’s Moviehouse. After the films there will be a forum for neighbors to discuss the crime and what next steps we can take as a community.
If you are in the neighborhood and unable to attend the 2pm vigil and march, I hope you will join us at 3rd Ward (195 Morgan Ave.) at 7pm on Sunday night.

The vigil tonight really brought home how heartbreaking an assault like this can be. It might have been easier to put aside the grieving and just go on with our lives… after all, it’s not too hard for us to return to our normal weekend routines. But, the family and the friends of Jose Sucuzhañay are not able to simply move on because their grieving isn’t over yet. And our community didn’t abandon them… because it’s just not over for the rest of us yet either. When the word got around of the horror that occurred in our own backyard, the Bushwick family came together on a cold December night to help heal the sorrow and to show much needed support. It would have been very easy to ignore the suffering of the Sucuzhañay family which will probably never heal. But, instead of just turning a blind eye, we did the exact opposite and proved that our grieving isn’t over yet either.

About 300 people turned out. Very diverse group. Lots of speakers, including the Brooklyn D.A. who said this is the No. 1 crime to solve in their office. It was pretty hard to hear the speakers most of the time. One guy who I think is a gay assemblyman said he was beaten 20 or 30 years ago and the cops would not press charges, so he created the hate crime law on the books now. That got a big burst of applause.

Although the 1000 reported in the papers seems exagerated, I think I saw more than 300. One of the politicos there was Nydia Velasquez, a congresswoman. The mother of Manny Mayi was also there but I don’t think she spoke. There were also two City Council reps. I could not hear anyone very well either.

And where were these marchers when it was 3 African-American college students in New Jersey who were killed by HISPANIC illegal aliens?
Jeremy Sapienza December 15th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Yeah if you can’t fly around the world protesting every crime everywhere, you shouldn’t even pay attention to something that happened in your own neighborhood. Right? Good logic there.
