Bushwick Culture Weekend Picks 12/4/08

Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday! The ‘Wick was quiet and the feast I attended on Knickerbocker was amazing. After a few trips to Richie’s gym on Myrtle, my jeans are fitting almost normally and I’m ready to get outta town for a weekend. For those of you back (and/or staying) in the neighborhood this weekend, there are plenty of fab art/culture/music/holiday shopping options to hit up!
Tonight, get cozy in the Northeast Kingdom Den at Acoustic Night with Buffie Gilbert and Mike Visser, among others. For you adventurous travelers, head to the Burg for the first anniversary of Parklife: “Brooklyn’s premier Britpop party.” Bushwick’s own Jesse Yarbrough is part of the (extremely attractive and genius) Parklife team and trust me, it’s a good time.
Friday, there’s art to be had. Take your piggy banks to Factory Fresh to score some sweet deals at The Deville’s Holiday Special featuring: Bigger pieces at better prices, discounted art from the Skewville archives, music and video Installation by Daniel Klag and XXX Rated photos by Chris&Chris. Across town, Papa B Studios presents recent works by Melissa Bartlett and Jacek Maczynski.
Saturday, start off your day off with even more art (you’d think we had a spectacular emerging art scene out here or something?!). Visit Present Perfect Continuous at NUTUREArt on Grand: a “multi-media exploration” beginning at 4. The Laundromat opens its doors for a one day exhibit featuring: Patrick Cuffe, Ben Godward, and Scott Wilson. Also — don’t forget to check out the “stupid, ridiculous, crummy art” (it pains me to even type that -mean!-, but I love a “viral” campaign). After you’ve seen it all (or some of it) you have some music options to consider. Sleep When Dead presents a long list of folks at Silent Barn including: Hurray for the Riff Raff and Gold Eyes, and Bushwick Starr hosts a rock line-up including: Not Quite Dead Yet, and Sister Helen.
Sunday, you have both art and commerce options before you. Show some “TLC with DIY” at 3rd Ward’s Handmade Holiday Craft Fair. There is too much good stuff to possibly list — check it. For even more art, visit Pocket Utopia, where the fabulous Austin Thomas presents a Sunday Salon on the life and art of Lee Lozano lead by artist Fred Gutzeit (current show at P.U.) and a special treat — strong coffee served up by Kevin Regan as part of his Coffee Talk project.

Hey I know pretty off topic, but I saw you made mention of “Richie’s Gym” up top..any one remember an article about a new “Fit City” gym opening around November? Anyone got word on if and when it opened??
