Bonnie Baxter at NK Lounge — photo by Phoebe Waterson.

Bonnie Baxter, the Bushwick duo made up of Miss Baxter herself (vocals, guitars, keys) and multi-instrumentalist Nicos Kennedy (guitars, keys, noise), were joined by video artist Christina Medina for a hypnotic and riveting performance at the Northeast Kingdom Lounge on Sunday night.

With a short, but intense set, Bonnie Baxter impressed the intimate crowd at NK Lounge with a menagerie of hallucinatory guitars, wafting vocals and experimental beats. Baxter’s crystalline voice has a distinctive, melancholy quality that seamlessly pulls you into the band’s haunting and languorous dreamscape of dark beauty. I was really taken with their delicate, but big sound and their astounding talent.

As a backdrop to the music, the very talented Christina Medina premiered a really cool new visual piece — a mind-altering sequence of bridges, tunnels, and foliage presented in a disorienting mirrored reflection. The film was intoxicating and perfectly suited (and timed) to Bonnie Baxter’s gorgeously tripped-out set. DJ Russala of Asa Ransom DJ’d afterwards, spinning vintage classics and post-punk rarities, which got the lingering crowd moving.

Bonnie Baxter offered attendees their brand new EP for free, and piles of them were distributed around the lounge. When You Are Hollow contains four songs, including the title track, as well as the searing opener “One to Change” and the haunting opus “Left to Burn.”
