701 Chauncey is a very rare thing: an almost completely intact example of Bushwick’s ornate frame houses, its wooden moldings and cornices and details in crisp shape. Look at that awesome Juliet balcony above the door! Speaking of the door, it’s newer and ugly, but with some scouting for one of the same period and shape (or maybe buying a matching one off a neighbor?) you could bring this house back to its original splendor. Unfortunately, we can’t see any interiors, and while the price is steeper than normal, the house is gigantic at 4000sqft.
701 Chauncey Street | $689,000
4000sqft | 20ft-wide | 3-family, 3ba | frame

This block of houses with the Juliet balconies was on one of Adam’s Bushwick tours. Very nice!

Before, today, I never heard the term “Juliet Balcony”; but it certainly aptly describes this building.
I have always thought that the wonderful buildings on this block came right out of the French Quarter in New Orleans. This is one of my favorite secret areas of Bushwick.

Juliet is also called “smoker’s balcony” — but that’s not quite as nice sounding. :)

What makes this house so remarkable is that it is one of a tiny number of these buildings that has not been covered in tacky siding. I always wonder, if Bushwick will ever become so desireable that people will buy these houses, remove the vinyl and aluminum siding and start reproducing these amazing, examples of late 19th century craftsmanship.

One block north of here I was taunted by a young man with a shiny handgun for no reason.
One block south of here I was snuck up on, my head was slammed into a pole, I was kicked in the face and robbed. There is still blood from this incident smeared around the doorknob of 720 (a less ‘intact’, more ‘tacky’ example of this model, but with an on-and-off speakeasy run from the basement)–Adam should add this authentic piece of recent history to his tour!
Very nice family-oriented block though, for the most part.
This is not a “secret area of Bushwick”.
The Honeymooners ‘lived’ a few blocks south of here.
There is an old wooden planter, fallen into disuse, about 3/4 of the way up this block, whose white paint has peeled off on one side in the exact shape of Woody Woodpecker’s head in profile.
There is an antique Singer sewing machine which has not moved from the center of the backyard of 720 for as long as most of us have been alive.

Sorry to hear you were attacked, Jeff. Thanks for the info. A few blocks from there, I parked my car near a “flat fix” place and returned to find the tire flat and a giant tack in it. How convenient for the flat fix place.
