I wish that when I had been looking for a house, that there was something on this awesome stretch of historic Bushwick Avenue in my price range — like there is now. This beautiful little brick house shares the area with Victorian homes, brownstones, and grand 1920s apartment houses — this is truly Bushwick’s architectural showcase street. 940 Bushwick is really a large four-bedroom duplex with a two-bedroom rental upstairs — you have help with the mortgage but have all the other perks of a single-family house, like a private back yard. Unfortunately, once again, we have no interior photos to gauge the condition of the property, but it sold for $650K last year, and before that was foreclosed on in 2004(!), so be prepared for a mess. I think it’s worth it — in the next boom (or if the govt stops propping the sick system up, the coming calm recovery), Bushwick Avenue will be it.
940 Bushwick Avenue | $500,000
2391sqft | 20ft-wide | 2-family, 3ba | brick

You know, the other day I drove over to the 11221 post office on broadway and I took bushwick avenue most of the way there from Dekalb. I was mildly awestruck at how beautiful this stretch of road looked. There are some amazing, amazing properties along here.

Yeah, every time I ride down there I oggle and notice something awesome about the mansions on that street. They’re really stunning.

Interestingly, this is the same block that Mayor Hylan once lived on, at 959 Bushwick Ave, which had to be on or near this block. He was mayor of NYC from 1918 to 1925 or so, and was very instrumental in getting a good part of the NYC subway system built, such as the 6th and 8th Ave lines, Queens Blvd, etc.
It shows you how “rich and affluent” Bushwick Ave was back then…..
