White girls not being raped in Bushwick. (yoinked from yokokikuchi‘s flickr stream)
“Is Bushwick Safe!?” Part Two: A reader emailed this morning to tell us about her Monday:
“I was walking to the train this morning and a Hasidic dude in a BMW flagged me down at Irving/Troutman. I thought he needed directions. He told me he there’s a girl who might move into a building he owns on Troutman but she wanted to talk to ‘a girl who lives here’ first, and then wanted to give me her number to call her! It was Monday, my power had just been shut off (even though I paid my bill) and I was very pre-coffee. I made a face and told him no. And he was angry! I love it here but I’m not going out of my way to do a live ad for a landlord.”
I’d like to add: Dear Miss Priss: Go Away. First of all, this “is Bushwick safe?” line of questioning is sort of offensive — we all live here. Bushwick is the indie art and music capital of New York City right now. Do you think we’d live in a fucking warzone? Second, if you are so concerned about moving to a place that you need reassurance from a (presumably white) girl who lives here, maybe you had better just stay where you are — having a whole apartment to yourself may not be worth the risk of witnessing a crack transaction or suffering the indignity of cat calls.
And landlords — do your own damn PR. Maybe if your renovations weren’t such bottom-of-the-barrel shit your properties would be able to attract better tenants.

More than a little wacky. Why was this dude asking this girl for her number now, really? Bushwick isn’t safe with stalkers like this. Or landlords like this.

did you know if you include prison men are 10 times more likely to be raped??????????
guess not.

jeez, lighten up on the girl. can readers only contribute to the blog if they have something positive to say about bushwick? i think that people will think twice about sharing stuff if they think they may be ridiculed in a public manner.
also, i relate to her. when i walk around here i get sexually harassed at least once per block. and hasidic men are the worst. they have tried to lure me into their blue minivans on numerous occasions… once with the promise to “make [me] feel good.” (they are overzealous about “protecting” the women in their own community, but i guess shiksas are fair game?) truly, i would be surprised if all the broker wanted was a plug for the apartment.
i have lived here a long time, and can take this stuff in stride, but it does contribute to what some women feel is a threatening environment (are you female? no? ok then), and i think it is worth mentioning. relating a particular unpleasant experience is NOT a dis on the neighborhood. it’s just one experience, and she shared hers.
also, dresden, can you back up your math?
# of women in the US > # of men in prison. i think that algebra is F’d.

Um, nobody is giving the girl a hard time. At all.

“Dear Miss Priss: Go Away.”

I took my math from a Vice magazine. So it’s sound, in that regurgitated hipster soundness -
A hipster chick complains about some bullshit caption that’s perhaps sexist in some slight way. I use her own culture’s most popular bullshit toilet paper as a source on a statistic that buries her argument.
How could I go wrong?

Oh, that’s right, some of us have integrity and all that –
Well, good thing my real name isn’t Dresden.
Lol.

I think you misunderstood who the “Miss Priss” comment was aimed at. There was no ridicule aimed at the commenting reader.

is rape supposed to be funny?
when referring to safe-as-can-be status,
why the fuck not?
