The New Kings Democrats won most of the seats they contested in Brooklyn, but the Lopez machine rumbles on in Bushwick. Matt Cowherd and his running mate, Linda Lou Lowry, lost in the competition against Lopez lackies for two of the 6200 seats in the Brooklyn Democratic County Committee. No surprise there, and the stakes aren’t really very high, as Aaron Short described several months ago: “the position is as well-known as it is powerful.” So nobody’s life is much changed because of this.

According to the Gotham Gazette, Cowherd maintains that Lopez and the Brooklyn Dems financed a campaign to get his name off the ballot and printed flyers urging a vote against him. No other local committee seat race was targeted.

But Lopez “counters that Cowherd lost because he wasn’t the best candidate. He painted the race as one between ‘yuppie newcomers‘ versus lifelong Hispanic residents…’I’m willing to work with any county committee member as long as the dialogue is pro-Brooklyn,’ he assures. ‘But I don’t have time to deal with people who are in constant conflict.’”

Allow me to translate. Fuck you, yuppie scum. If you aren’t taken in by Vito’s pandering, you might as well not exist. If you are in “constant conflict” — that is, if you in any way dissent from the idea of Vito Lopez running the same show he’s run in Bushwick for 30 years and are moved to do something about it — you will be crushed. The interesting part is that Vito doesn’t hire his own staff from among the large pool of “lifelong Hispanic residents.” No, he hires the best and the brightest wherever he can get them — most of his staff are, in fact, yuppie newcomers. What’s the matter, Vito? Bushwickers are good enough to vote for you but not, god forbid, share office space with you? I guess the behind the scenes operations are too important to be left to the natives. Hm?
