$1400 — loft: Really? A big, bright loft in a great old commercial building with views for $1400? What’s the catch? Make sure you have the roof access bit in your LEASE, so they can’t lock it on you later.
PETS OK | Myrtle and Himrod | street view | Knickerbocker M/DeKalb L
$1100 — 2br rr: This is cheap even for a railroad, and at a great location near the park and Peruvian. This would be a major coup, considering the prices people are paying to live in Bushwick these days, and this is in a central location on an attractive block.
Stanhope and Irving | street view | DeKalb L
$1275 — 1br: Pretty good apartment across from Wyckoff Hospital and right on the L station. The ad makes it seem like you have to run for your life to the train, though. Get a grip — this is right near our new wine store!
Stanhope and Wyckoff | street view | DeKalb L
$1000 — 1br: Cheap, decent, convenient to the city. This must be in one of those grand old brick apartment houses on Bushwick Avenue. Jump on it!
PETS OK | Bushwick and Gates | street view | Gates JZ
$1650 — 1br loft/Bushwick wannabe: Huge, nicely renovated loft — exposed brick, wood floors, slick kitchen and bath. Note to agent: open the curtains when you take a photo, and we’ll excuse your lack of spelling ability and real estate term knowledge. Turns out this is technically on the Bed-Stuy side of Broadway — I realized that by looking at the street view and noticing the projects towering above it. We’ll leave it anyhow, it’s a good place, only 100 feet or so onto…that side, and across the street from Key Foods.
PETS OK | Hancock and Broadway | street view | Halsey J
dishonorable mention: This absolutely shameful, shockingly hideous piece of trash is still being hocked by this moronic agent who seems to not understand the meaning of the words he’s misspelling — namely, gorgeous and beautiful. It would be one thing if this were meant as affordable housing and the porthole-sized bay windows a means for saving on heating and cooling but $2000 for a slapped-together shitbox under the JMZ tracks? PASS.

that streetview thing is handy, even if it makes things look especially dingy.
that ditmars house, i go by it on the train every day. it looks like a sad Cyclops. what do they have against windows? maybe it’s like that cuz it’s magic! according to the copy, it’s one block from both the J and the “N” train! wow! i’m going to bay ridge!

The shitbox on ditmars has been for sale almost 8 months ,
Usually when a place has a hrd time selling it’s also hrd to rent

Myrtle and Himrod is far from East Williamsburg. It’s Bushwick! Realtors have to get their heads out of their asses. And that loft would be difficult to divide into separate bedrooms because it’s so narrow. And it’s right next to the train! Who wants that going by your window in the middle of the night when you’re trying to sleep?

Got to agree with Pixie. Myrtle and Himrod is about as close to Williamsburg as Kansas City is to Paris. But it’s all marketing after all.

I’ve been in apartments next to the train — it’s not that bad. It’s actually kind of cool. As with all noise in Bushwick, you’d get used to it anyhow.
Why WOULD you divide that loft into separate bedrooms?
pixie June 20th, 2008 at 10:35 am
I had a lot of noise at my old apt (without a train going by) and I did not get used to it. My place now is completely silent at night – it’s like the suburbs.
As far as dividing it into bedroom is concerned, most people I know that live in lofts have built walls and created bedrooms. Not too many people are paying $1400 on their own.

i live half a block from the train and now i find i need to have a fan or some noise running at night just to get to sleep. i can’t live without that noise!
