Bushwick Open Studios Preview: Erin Haldrup

“Street Car,” by Erin Haldrup
Erin Haldrup is out of town, so I couldn’t see her studio early. But she sent along some of her work and described her art and her impressions of our neighborhood:
Tell me about your art: My paintings are big, colorful and they have narratives that are based on memories or made up scenarios. I like over-the-top storytelling in a painting. Max Beckman and Diego Rivera influence me a lot. If a painting I made could give a person the sensation of having just finished a novel that they love, I would be very happy. I am in New Orleans right now, as I am writing this. I used to live here years ago and I can’t get enough of this city! Heaven and Hell sort of weave into each other down here, or else crash together like cymbals on a regular basis. I want to paint stories about that and to try to remember the city’s intoxicating color sense while painting.
How long have you been in Bushwick?: I have had a studio in Bushwick for about two years and I have lived here since October of this year.
Why did you move to Bushwick?: I moved to Bushwick to be near my studio. I also really like the feel of the neighborhoods here and the friendly people. It’s a smallish community, it’s laid back and there are some cultural things going on here that I am interested in.
What’s your favorite part of living in Bushwick?: My favorite thing about living in Bushwick is the way the sky looks when you get off the train. You can see so much of it and the sunsets are beautiful from here.

I stopped by Erin’s studio on Sunday. The colors and compositions are so beautiful — amazingly impressive in person.
