I stopped by artist Gregg Evans‘ bright, top -floor apartment/studio this Saturday to see how he was preparing for next weekend’s Bushwick Open Studios, and to ask him a few questions:
Tell me about your art: I’m a photographer, and have recently begun making books. My work stems from day to day life; the seemingly banal objects and spaces we overlook in a given day or week, i.e. the books on one’s bookshelves or the newspapers we leave behind on the subway. I am interested in the remnants of consumer culture, archaeology, and what our products say about us. I like the work of Andrea Robbins & Max Becher, Robert Adams, and Scott Peterman. I am currently working on a body of work focusing on vacant commercial plots of land for sale upstate, the trash left behind on the side of the road, and Wal-Mart. I recently published a book, I Could Walk Away Now And You Wouldn’t Care., which sells at Dashwood Books and at Opening Ceremony, and will be selling a limited run zine of the work I’ve been making upstate called “The State of Upstate” during the open studios.
How long have you been in Bushwick?: I’ve lived in Bushwick for a year.
Why did you move to Bushwick?: I had been living in Long Island City and wanted more space and cheaper rent. Bushwick is pretty inexpensive and I really liked the sense of community in the neighborhood.
What’s your favorite part of living in Bushwick?: Convenience and price! Mackenzie Color, the darkroom I use, has the cheapest membership rates around and is a four block walk from my house! Sure, the grocery stores are sort of overpriced, but that’s New York. I can come home from work and go straight to the darkroom, get a brie and avocado sandwich for $5 on the way and still be home in time for Law & Order.
Gregg will be showing photographs of landscapes taken on vacant commercial plots of land for sale around Newburgh, NY. For more of his work, he’s listed on the White Columns Curated Artist Registry. You can find copies of his book, I Could Walk Away Now And You Wouldn’t Care., at Spoonbill & Sugartown, Dashwood Books and at Opening Ceremony. Copies will also be for sale at his studio this weekend, along with his limited edition zine.
