$1400 — 2br rr: Beautiful old apartment in a great part of the neighborhood. Has a bay front, original parquet floors with borders, walk-in closet…it says granite countertops but no, it has granite-patterned laminate. That’s okay, this place still passes the quality test.

That railroad looks super nice, for a railroad, with its original floors, ceilings, and window trim. Why don’t more building owners leave well enough alone and maintain what they have, rather than ripping everything out and putting in cheap stuff that doesn’t fit and doesn’t go? In my building, for example, just to give one of many examples, the central staircase was replaced with a new one that is the wrong size and so now the hall is pitch black because the light from the skylight can no longer reach past the top floor. It’s actually cheaper to fix the old rather than replace with the new. But you have to go to an old neighborhood store that carries the old parts, can’t get it at Home Depot.

What is it with the ‘No Pets Allowed’ apartments this week?
Mopar – I have yet to live in a NYC apartment that has not received a cheap reno. And don’t even get me started on the “so many coats of paint that the doors no longer close” thing.
