Bushwick Culture: Weekend Picks 5/22/08

Arting

5/23 - Super Thing Artist Talk
Third Ward. 195 Morgan Avenue.
7-8 pm, Reception. 8-9 pm, Chat with the artists/musicians. Free.

BOS ‘08 is right around the corner, but before we all go on total art overload, try to find a moment to check out the latest from 3rd Ward. Tomorrow night, Cassie Thornton & the Future Unincorporated will discuss their work and creative process in the midst of the current exhibition, The Super Thing. The show is “dedicated to the zealous, jerky synth-powered, midwestern heroes of DEVO and showcases art which shares their bold aesthetics, politics and humor” and features not only postcards by Mark Mothersbaugh (I for one will go see art stuff made by the genius who gave us this), but also Molleindustria’s latest Mortal Combat-styled fight video game, some indecent robotic Mechanical Dolls, Mike Dee’s layered music videos and last but certainly not least – mutants & dismembered soldiers. If that laundry list of creativity isn’t enough… there will be cocktails AND cake!

Acoustic Music

5/22 Downstairs Dustup
Northeast Kingdom Lounge. 18 Wyckoff Avenue.
10 pm. Free.

A few months ago, Jessica & I stumbled upon Peter (one of the nicest guys to chat up at the coffeeshop) hosting a bevy of acoustic musicians in the NK Lounge. Since them, I hear the thing has totally blown up and is often floor space only. Peter has assembled an apparently “triple-powered bill” this evening with: Mike Baglivi, Soft Black and the Telethons as well as Jay Stolti. Go early, have some deliciously fancy mac & cheese, stay late for a glass of whiskey served up by Bushwick’s finest and pretend it’s a month in which the current temperature makes sense.

Indie Rock Music

5/24 - The Skaters, Lucky Dragons, etc etc etc
Silent Barn. 915 Wyckoff Ave.
8 PM. Cost: tba.

Tood P (once named Best thrower of no-bullshit far-flung indie rock shows by the Village Voice) does it again with a full-scale line-up on Saturday night – both upstairs (in the kitchen) & downstairs (in the basement). My computer is tragically flawed today, so you’ll be missing out on my untrained personal take, but I can give you a list of bands & links to hear for yourself!THE SKATERS, Kemialliset Ystävät Jan Anderzén’s band, from FINLAND, G Lucas Crane vs NonHorse, LUCKY DRAGONS, James Amoeba, Javelin, Rainbro. If any of the following things appeal to you: psych folk, tapes and broken forgotten sound, harsh onslaughts of blunt syrupy noise, crazy bits of Nintendo game soundtracks stuck forever in degraded 8-bit loops…. then get over to Ridgewood this weekend. Going to tryyyy to make it to this show, haven’t been to SB since the punk rock pillow fight in November!

Music – next week

5/28 - Pass Kontrol
Duck Duck. 161 Montrose Ave.
8pm.

Bushwick all-stars, Pass Kontrol are slated to play Duck Duck next Wednesday the 28th. Check their MySpace before you head over — and also check out Duck Duck’s weekend brunch. Hear it’s fabulous!
