Hell yes! What, am I made of money?
I shop at the Ridgewood Pork Store, Associated, Best Poultry (Starr + St. Nick)… But I am in need of a good greengrocer.
I cook daily, at least 2 meals/day, and i LOVE to shop at Angels on Knickerbocker across from the park. Best greengrocer in my 11+ years in ny. They always have the freshest fruit and veg and I can fill my fridge for well under $20. I got 5 bell peppers yesterday for under $2. Unfortunately I have to go to the city for cheaper organic stuff (Brooklyn Natural prices make me MAD).
Since moving to Bushwick this year I’ve started cooking and even bringing my lunch to work. I’ve only shopped at the Associated on Broadway and Grove. But I’d love nearby suggestions (I think it’s ridiculous to haul groceries in from the city).
since i try to be a vegan i never expect to be able to eat out without a lot of trouble. it was the same way in clinton hill, tho they had Black Iris just over the border in Ft Greene, which was middle eastern stuff. then right before i moved here they opened a Red Bamboo, which is mostly vegan. i suppose it would be nice to have such an option round these parts. is there anything vaguely middle eastern here? maybe i can convince the muslim dudes who run the no-beer bodega to give it up and open a falafel hut.
ps. yukon gold potatoes at Lucy’s Fruit Market, 5lbs for $2!
I cook on a semi-regular basis, depending on my work schedule. I go to Food Dimensions for my regular groceries (they have some good sales) and to Mr Kiwi for produce and organic milk. Food Dimensions has veggie burgers but they’re way cheaper in Trader Joe’s so I usually stock up when I go there so I won’t have to do it very often
Life cafe has vegan stuff all of the time!
Northeast Kingdom has a vegan reuben.
You can eat vegan at El Loco Burrito (they even have soy cheese)
Mojito Loco delivers to my nabe
Falafel Chulo is only a 8 minute bike ride from most of Bushwick.
You have to try the Parisienne. That shit is ridiculous, pickles and french fries in your falafel with fried eggplant?
fresh, from scratch ramen every monday, tofu, pickled vegetables, miso broth, etc..
nachos on wednesday
homemade pizza on tuesday
thursday’s are free for all
friday’s dinner usually consists of a jameson & pbr.
saturday, i’m usually too drunk to know what I’ve eaten.
I try to cook most of my own food. Since I work full time and I’m a student, I don’t have a lot of time to make a lot of small fancy meals like I used to. Now, it’s a lot of big pot meals: soups, stews, casseroles, crock pot dishes, stir fry, big pans of cabbage rolls or lasagna. It’s a good thing that I like leftovers because I’ll eat the same thing for 3-4 days in a row. I made a tuna casserole tonight, and some black bean hummus for snacks and lunch tomorrow. I had a craving for it for about a month. Mmmm.
I second the recommendation for Angels – great produce, reasonable prices right on Knickerbocker. I also do a fair amount of shopping at the C-Town on Wyckoff and the Associated at Knick and Starr. Both stores are clean, fair prices and well stocked. Actually a lot nicer than my old market on the LES.
I do cook occasionally but I also like picking up a roasted chicken at Chimu on Stockholm and then I can eat for several days.
Oh and I am addicted to TJ’s. Soy milk, cereal, bagged mesclun, goat cheese all of which are not readily available in the ‘hood yet.
Yes, we love to cook and buy fresh flowers. Makes life so much more enjoyable. We shop on Sundays for the week, then cook Sun, Mon, Tuesday, and go out on Fridays and Sats. Some of the little stores on Wyckoff have good Mexican stuff (like chorizo), we buy staples at C-Town, stop at Grand Central and Whole Foods for convenience, but shop Citarella for love.
We would like to buy grassfed meat and organic vegetables at the Union Square and other farmer’s markets, but so far have not found the time, since it’s not open on Sundays or after 6 on the weekdays.
P.S. We are going to look into the Park Slope food coop since we have a car. I hear they have the best quality and most inexpensive groceries in the city. About a year ago, some people were trying to start a food coop in the warehouse section of Bushwick. Is that still happening? We would support it.

I love to cook for my boyfriend and I. Definitely makes an apartment a home.

RE: Trader Joe’s, try their “meatless meatballs” sometime. They’re the best!
Oh, to answer the poll question, I cook every day. Since I don’t live in the Bush, where I shop is of no interest.

I don’t cook. When I order from Fresh Direct I usually get prepared meals.

I love to cook, but MJ, your post is so refreshing. You go, girl.
I find this all very interesting because the two main people in my life do NOT cook, hate cooking, and flaunt their refusal to cook.

;o)
oh… i also hop on the LIRR about once a month to clear out my parent’s freezer of leftovers. My mom uses leftovers as bribes to get me there.
I found that lentil soup is the cheapest thing to make. It only cost about $5 in ingrediants and it fed my roommate and me for 4 days.
We cook quite a bit. But now that it’s full on grillin’ season? oh you know it’s on. Full on.

I voted “only occasionally”, but what i mean is that I BBQ in the summer on the rooftop of 210 Cook St. Who else is into BBQ’ing… or who isn’t right?!
