Early this week because the first show is tomorrow night!
Music/Show
4/17– Dan Deacon and the Ed Schrader Show.
Ridgewood Masonic Temple. 1054 Bushwick Ave. @ Gates.
8pm. $8.
The Ed Schrader Show is a live action talk show with music, and special guests Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer, The State) and Eric Fensler (Tim & Eric Awesome Show). Baltimore based electronic composer Dan Deacon will provide music at some point during the evening. Deacon, who is actually a classically trained musician, says his music is influenced by such diverse elements as Devo, Talking Heads, Scratch Orchestra, Raymond Scott, and Conlon Nancarrow. Deacon shows are especially notorious for its frenzied crowds, and his performance techniques show influences from the Fluxus Movement. He performed earlier this year at the Whitney Museum, and apparently over a thousand people showed up, so you may want to get to temple a little early. (visit: Dan Deacon)
Music
4/18 — Todd P Presents: High Places & Ecstatic Sunshine
Market Hotel. 957 Broadway @ Myrtle.
9:30pm. $8.
Brooklyn duo High Places makes me think Atlas Sound meets world music. Ecstatic Sunshine, two Baltimore based guitarists, are self described as “minimalist, ambient and punk.” The shimmery cacophonous sound of these two bands might be the perfect counterpart for the tumult of Deacons electronic beats. Also on tap for the night are CEX, Z’s, and Evangelista aka Carla Bozulich. As usual, DIY venue Market Hotel asks that you do not drink/hang out on the street out front. (visit: Todd P)
Trapeze
4/19 — The Hope Freedom Destiny and Love Variety Show
The Bushwick Starr. 207 Starr Street.
8-10pm. Sliding scale $15-$20.
Natalie Agee and friends present a night of sweet luvin, hula hoops, areal acts, live music, passion and surprises. Agee “is a performer of most everything, from modern dance to hula hoop acts, singing in stairwells to chinese pole circus tricks on lampposts.” She runs the Ruby Streak Trapeze Studio in Brooklyn. I caught a trapeze show at the BS a few months back where her students showcased all that they have learned from the master herself. That night, trapeze went from “not being my thing” to totally captivating. Also, fellow Bushwick Culture hunter Anna and I will be bartending, so tip us. (visit: The Bushwick Starr)
Drawing
4/21 — Figure Drawing hosted by Andy Cross
Starr Space. 108-110 Starr Street.
7pm-10pm. $10. (Every Monday)
Starr Space, former dance hall, day care center, and a salvation army thrift store, is now an artist-run space developed by art star Jules de Balincourt and artist/musician Andrea Merkx, housing performances, lectures, screenings, readings, exhibitions and a variety of arty projects. Andy Cross is a Brooklyn-based artist with an MFA and a way with words. Check out: “Untiled: Aerobics 2005″ for a killer example of his work, and what you can hope to gain under his tutelage.
