Bushwick Clicks 2/11/08

Beautiful parkside Starr Street, from Irving Avenue toward Knickerbocker
So…You Interested?: Part of the roof of the Waste Management building caved in, just as Tom White was showing a prospective roommate the view from his loft roof.
Rippin’ Off McKibbin: Hipster kids, the guy with the pants below his ass and the gigantic Yankees cap? You didn’t invite him to your loft party. You can throw him out and not be a racist. Otherwise he will rob you.
Path of Least Resistance: The Observer notes the trend of hipsters and other newbies moving to Ridgewood, and why not? Especially close to the DeKalb and Wyckoff L stations, there are tons of pretty streets with decent apartments for cheaper than “hot” parts of Bushwick. They got a lot of little details wrong, but I like the quotes from the long-time local guy.

newyorkshitty.com just did a post on Ridgewood, they said it’s boring! but then they posted photos of a burned out minivan, which i find pretty exciting.
as for the article, they keep calling it ‘Fresh Pond AVENUE’ which drives me nuts. also they refer to the neighbrohood as ‘Ridgeway’ which i also find annoying.
the ridgewood article’s rife with mistakes and misspellings. someone actually got paid for that?
yeah that paper needs a factchecker something crazy!
I have a friend that just moved to this area. Being the good friend that I am and the only resident Brooklynite/NY’er in our circle she asked me what I knew about the area. More precisely St Nicholas Avenue. I must say I was quite abashed at not knowing anything. Luckily she has one of the most informative and convivial landlords I’ve met. Her neighbors are friendly, and the streets are safe. It reminds me of Kensington and Windsor Terrace a bit. As I was moving a box in for her an older Spanish woman, who just happened to be the owner of the building next door, asked me if I’d like to see the one bedroom she just renovated. Hmmmm, should I contemplate a move out of the ‘Burg?
Anyway, your blog is extremely informative and one of the reasons why my friend chose to move where she said.
Thanks
Awesome! Yes, St. Nick is a great street: lots of trees, great housing stock, still close to what’s good in Bushwick AND Ridgewood.
I didn’t know how to post a thread here, but figured this would be a good place to post this in this Bushwick Clicks thread, as a next best thing….
I was in Orlando, Florida a couple weeks ago, and we were eating at the bar at TGI Fridays on International Drive, and when I went to the rest room I did a double take when walking through the place….on the wall was an authentic, original pillar sign from the Montrose Ave Station on the L line.
Further down was also a sign from the Sterling Ave station ont he Flatbush line, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of the Montrose Ave sign….
Okay, well html doesn’t work, and universal not either, so here are the links:

I don’t want to make a big stink because in general I like this blog, but in general, I do believe it is racist to kick a person out of your loft party because he has a big yankees hat and sagging pants or whatever you said back there and is not white. If your party has lots of people coming to it and you don’t know who they are and you single someone out for their race and the way they dress, you are a racist. I don’t know how else to view this. I know that you didn’t say they are not white but you said “You can throw him out and not be a racist” which I can only interpret as meaning that the he in question is not white in addition to not dressing like you. That is racism. I have heard many times of people having their stuff stolen at parties where only white people were present, especially hipsters of the type that live in the McKibben dorms. I am sure that at least some of the people living there take drugs, which are non-productive and cost money, two factors that create criminal behavior. Again, I like this blog very much because it deals with my neighborhood and it is of interest to me, but I had to say my two cents on this: I think your statement above is racist, and that is extremely offensive to me.
“I know that you didn’t say they are not white but you said ‘You can throw him out and not be a racist’ which I can only interpret as meaning that the he in question is not white in addition to not dressing like you. That is racism.”
No, it should be interpreted as THEY probably thought it would be racist to throw him out because he is possibly non-white.
