Yes, I'm aware that times have changed and Bushwick is an "up and comer" and all that, but that doesn't change the sticker shock I feel when I look at the rents on these apartments--especially knowing that the neighborhood is still considered a "bargain" by some. $1K+ for an apartments in Bushwick tells me that NYC is really, truly finished for the working class.

My great-uncle used to own some apartments over on St. Nick. How I wish those were still in the family; we could be cashing in now like the other slumlords ;)

Joan,
first off the coffee and soda machine isn't even free. It's only spring water that they give for free.
The free gym is not fully equipped, it only has 2 treadmills, a bike, an elliptical machine, bench press with weights and pullys, lat machine and some more minor stuff.

Then they threw in a table hockey table, ping pong table, pool table, and a pacman machine.

the lounge is just a few couches, some lamps a 39(?) inch tv with cable connection.

Ok, so they went ahead and built 2 soundproof rooms for music rehearsal (short on what they originaly contemplated to do recording rooms)

All in all I would say it's probaly not more than 3 thousand feet of common area for all the above.

But I would give them that the basement is pretty cool looking and then there is the lovely courtyard in the front with an after-hour doorman.

Yet the 'wandering' people bug me too. Why just the other day I saw three guys 'wandering' to their apartment like 12:00pm, there was a certain aimlesness to their gait although hard to define.

They advertise a rooftop, but there's no elevator and some floors have 15 ft heights. there will definitely be a lot of "wandering" when going up.

All in all Joan, you sure are lucky that you got out of this place in time.

The Opera House "Dorms" are not all that glamourous. Yes, you might get coffee for free if everything is stocked and yes, they have laundry (3 washers/dryers) but the workout room was falling through the rotted wooden floors as well as the yoga room, which had been closed for months before I moved out, and the lounge. The building managers don't seem to want to spend the money to fix anything in these 'free' areas, so don't be blinded, take a real look at this place before making a decision.

It is VERY dorm like there. Loud music and people wandering around at late hours. I moved out a few months ago because it is not the normal adult living space. Young kids with no sense of their neighbors.
